i don't think it's absolutely necessary, as nothing has ever happened if I don't do it. but i still do it...just in case.
It's a good idea to do it, otherwise you run a chance of corrupting files that are in the process of being transferred.
There is no reason to not do it. You should always do it.
I have always done it, but for a long time, I thought that it wouldn't make a difference if nothing was currently being transferred. Then a friend of mine told me that other processes occur between the connected device and the computer, which you do not want to interrupt. So, you should always use your OS's option to safely unmount the device before you unplug the USB cable.
I learnt the hard way, transfered files to an external hard drive, and deleted them on my computer and pulled out the usb cable and it corrupted all the files on the external drive.
I had to format the drive as they also couldnt be deleted.
Never done it since
never actually did it, but then again, i usualy wait for activity to end to pull the cable,
same with my sony NW-HD5, never actually shutdown the device first, but always waited for any disk activity to end,

It's a good idea to safely remove by using "stop", When you do that, it make sure the drive is not in use by another process. If it is, windows will notify you.
