View Full Version : Patience for the 4GB fading fast
I'll admit, it's possible that i am simply weak, and rationalizing away the benefits of delayed gratification....but still, i'd like to hear what is helping others make the decision. Here's my thoughts: I would of course like to have the highest capacity possible, after all I just sold my 20GB X5L to raise money for this sweet little masterpiece. At the same time, i don't want to have a stack of sd cards to carry around and swap out looking for a song. After hearing some pretty decent evidence supporting the addition of SDHC capabilities in the next firmware, I'm begining to wonder how much of a difference 2GB internal mem will make. If i have 2 8GB cards (i could handle that much swapping) the extra 2GB suddenly becomes much less important. Then i had the impression that i will most likely be using my D2 like a next gen cd player of sorts, and i could almost forget that the thing even has internal mem and just focus on keeping files on the cards. In this scenario it's more economical to get the 2GB since an extra 2GB worth of sd mem is cheaper anyway. I guess the only thing stopping me from going and buying the 2GB D2 this very moment is that SDHC is not here now.... just like the 4GB D2 is not here NOW. Surely there are some of you out there feeling my pain right now, i'd love to hear your arguments for either decision.
I use 3 different computers daily, and Jetmall.net is the homepage on all of them. I swear, the second I see the 4GB model on the front page, I'll be placing my order and setting my timer for its delivery to my door :)
The main thing that's keeping me from buying the 2GB version right now is that Jetmall doesn't have the clear hard plastic case, or any of the other optional accessories available yet. Also the fact that the PDF version of the User's Manual isn't available online in English really convinces me that it's not yet time to buy the player.
With an upcoming firmware offering possible SD HC compatibility, I keep telling myself that the D2 was only released to stir up the market, and that waiting for the 4GB model and all the optional goodies is the smartest move.
But I'm dying here! I check Jetmall about every other hour. All day...
only benefits that would make me regret buying it knowing that the 4gb version might be on the USA market within like 3 weeks is bluetooth & voicecommand
2 more gb and minor superiority over the current 2gb version is pointless for me
you'll be spending at least $40 more bucks, with that $40 i intend to get a 4gb SD card which i find more convenient.
i'd like to hear what is helping others make the decision.
Too many things are promised to be fixed in the future. I'll wait for when more mature firmware is available.

I'm waiting for the first drop in price. 250 euros for a 4GB mp3... I mean... it's a matter of principle for christ sakes (the memory is what costs on these things and I'm mostly gonna use SDs anyways). Guess you could say, I'm willing to take it in the ass, but I wont go ass to mouth.
Shouldn't take more than 2 months for it to drop to 200 euro following Cowons history, then we'll have a deal. *spreads cheeks*

Some bugs are different then the others.
Besides, Cowon promised features, not just bug fixes.

I have the 2gb model and to be honest ALL of my music is on 2 x 4gb cards, the internal memory to me means zero. The only thing atm that concerns me is the battery life playing music via sd cards, but after 18 hours in 2 days the bars are at half, so looks like its going to be ok.
The convenience of popping out the card and adding more stuff is awesome, i hate attaching the usb cable and opening the flap carefully blah blah
well i just transfered a bit extra $ into my paypal account so i can grab an sd card, take advantage of the $15 promo, and get it all shipped together..... so the estimated countdown to some of the best material happiness this world can buy: 1 week [biggrin]

I see what you mean regarding that extra 2GB becoming less important. I think it's further highlighted by the fact that once you put in another card, the capacity is not combined, so for instance if you have large files on the thing for whatever reason, you may have to span them over the 2 different storage mediums.
but whats taking so long for the 4gb to come to the states? isn't the 4gb already out in europe?

Try getting on jetmall's mailing list. This is how I found out the date the D2 was going to be available. (Yet, on the release date, when I went to Jetmall.net, they still didn't have it available for sale. It went on sale the following day.)

I'm a little impatient too, but I've never considered going with the 2gb version. Who knows how long it will take for Cowon to implement SDHC compatibility or smooth out the bugs once it's available? I'll wait a few weeks and get the 4gb model.
Cowon has probably done us all a favor by introducing the D2 in the States last. By the time we received the 2gb model, a firmware update was ready for it. Asia and Europe have already experienced lots of software bugs we will never see. Everyone should remember just how picky we Americans are. We are the most demanding people in the world. Cowon can't afford to introduce a model with a bad rap in the U.S. I'm certain that weighed heavily in their decision to introduce it here last. I'll bet there is another firmware update ready or close to ready when the 4gb model bows here at the end of February. I also think you will see frequent updates for about six months. The D2 is a very important product to Cowon.

I retract the above considering the battery difference in sd cards as to internal memory its about half.
You guys are talking about a 4GB model. Is this the model that is already out in Europe?

That's the player I have. I wonder if you guys are talking about a different player. It came with FW 2.21 installed, and I have yet to discover any bugs.

Whoa, wait a tick..... HALF? [blink] [shocked]
that's not something I was expecting to hear. can you post your final stats from both tests, internal and sd mem? I saw in another thread that 8 hours 35 min of video playback was possible from sd cards. so either that means that your tests produced much lower numbers, or that 16-17 hours video is possible from internal. either way, a 50% battery reduction from sd cards takes a lot of wind out of the d2's sails, especially since my sights were set on keeping an 8GB+ card in mine all the time once the newly confirmed 2.30 firmware is released

Unfortunately with the sd card i got 24.5 hours from full to flashing battery, playing mp3s only at 192-320kbps, as it played at work had little time to change songs just let it go alphabetically. This was over 3 days. Doing internal test now but they rate at 50 plus, but in reality it should be 40 plus?
I dont know if it will get a little better once the battery is conditioned, but its far from the mark I expected.

Well, money isn't really an issue here, I rather go to a good shop with good support for when something breaks or isn't right :). And Mp3shop has nice support and got loads of awards from different consumer organisations so I chose for that. I have good experience with that shop myself as well.

Well I would'nt consider 25 hours from an SD card to be a deal breaker, that's alot of usage used non continually. My A2 gets about 9 hours-10 hours video, so
the D2 is still in the ballpark. The Only thing that would be nice, but not sure if it's doable in FW is to allow the copying of Media from SD to Flashmemory.

I have good experiences with both shops, so the price pulled me towards the other.
I'm also waiting on the 4Gb and I also check jetmall daily...
I have a Rio Carbon (5Gb) right now that's always full - I don't wanna pay for a new device that has significantly less internal memory. The SD cards will be very handy tho.
well, i was to impatient to wait for the 4gb. just placed my 2gb D2 today...bought it on the official site on ebay. i would've gone with newegg but they don't deliver to hawaii. sucking newegg.
im not to worried about memory space. i have a rio karma (about 90% full - and still functioning and battery life is still great at about 5-6 hrs straight playing considering i had it for almost 3 yrs now). also own an A2 and have absolutely NO problems with it after over a year (dec 2005).
one is mainly music (of course the karma) and the other is video (a2) with some music (my faves - songs just love to listen to on random).
so the D2 is for both. something i can just transfer quickly when i dont want to carry both my karma and a2 (since both are on the bulky side).
now i'll just have to figure out if any of my 1gb and 2gb cards are compatible. and check the list of compatible 4gb ones. or i can just wait and "hope" that bigger cards are compatible.
---------
and i cant wait to use it with my ULTIMATE EARS super.fi 5 pro earphones.
