does using a SD card drain the battery faster?

Will get back to you as im only using the sd card at the moment, these things last so long alot of owners havent had to recharge many times yet.
Yesterday 9 hours sd card and bar has dropped to 3/4. Will update as time goes

Day two 18 hours music playing non stop and 2 power on and offs, down to half

Hmm, Just realised, I have been using the memory card for all my videos and the player memory for music, probably not the most sensible thing for battery life.....
If it's anything like digital cameras the type of card can make a huge difference though, as I mentioned in another thread I got sent a SanDisk Ultra II with mine which was a pleasant surprise.

I have 2 4gb cards 1st is an el cheapo brand and the other is a Transcend brand and was over a hundred, battery use for both have been the same so far

MMM third day and battery flashes after 9 hours plus 9 hours plus 6.6 hours
therefore total 24.5 hours, way lower than I expected
My music is average 192-320kbps, three power on and offs, changing music about 40 times.

Sort of battery length related....

I was listening to music tonight and when I went to change songs I noticed I had only 1 bar left in the battery meter. I was surprised because while I didn't know the exact number of hours I had listened since the last charge I knew it wasn't enough to be down to 1 bar. I turned the player off and back on and the meter went up to 2 bars and I've been listening to music for the past 3 hours and its still at 2 bars.

Anybody else noticed any abnormality with the battery meter?

Could this have played a part in your unexpected short battery life Mikey? Maybe you had more time than the meter was telling you?

The battery was flashing so didnt want to persue any further although the recharge took only 3 hours (manual says 3.5 hours). i guess this indicates it wasnt ready to die. Wish they could have a more accurate battery meter

I can totally understand that

Maybe the next firmware will include a refined battery meter.

"A lithium-ion battery provides 300-500 discharge/charge cycles. The battery prefers a partial rather than a full discharge. Frequent full discharges should be avoided when possible. Instead, charge the battery more often or use a larger battery. There is no concern of memory when applying unscheduled charges.

Although lithium-ion is memory-free in terms of performance deterioration, batteries with fuel gauges exhibit what engineers refer to as "digital memory". Here is the reason: Short discharges with subsequent recharges do not provide the periodic calibration needed to synchronize the fuel gauge with the battery's state-of-charge. A deliberate full discharge and recharge every 30 charges corrects this problem. Letting the battery run down to the cut-off point in the equipment will do this. If ignored, the fuel gauge will become increasingly less accurate. (Read more in 'Choosing the right battery for portable computing', Part Two.) "

So you are saying charge whenever possible?
OR
Should I wait till it dies?

charge whenever possible.

Ive always been told the opposite :S - to let it drain completely otherwise you will get shadow charging

Nah, That's only for old Ni-Cd batteries. It's funny, took ages to get everyone to think about things like memory effect, then the technology changes!

charge whenever possible.

... and deep charge only when the battery gauge acts up (every 30 charges or so, approx: 2-3 times each year... or when you've just bought it and it's been kept on 40% charge??).

The manual says: "D2 requires more power to read and play back/record files from an external memory card so, battery life will be shorter when using external memory compared to using the internal memory."

What's the play time with Video on SD?

I'm testing play time with Video on SD card.

<4 gb Digiworks Korea memory MLC >
consumption power 100mA
working voltage 2.7 ~ 3.6V

Start full battery

2 hours 15 minutes later - bar has dropped to 3/4
4 hours 25 minutes later - 2/4

6 hours 42 minutes later - 1/4
8 hours 35 minutes later - dead...

movie file info

114.4 MB
24:29

Xvid (MPEG-4) (XVID)
320 x 240 ( 1.33 : 1 )
511.84 KBits/Sec
23.98 Frames/Sec

MPEG Layer-3 (0x0055)
128.00 KBits/Sec
44,100 Hz
2 Channels (STEREO)

D2 setting option

brightness 7
volume 20 (with earphone)
play mode - boundary - single

JetEffect
equalizer rock
bbe 4
mach3bass 3
3d 3
stero enhance 2
mp enhance check

I think it was so strong..

so the movie was played straight from SD card the whole time?

and 8 hours from that.. its pretty good

wow that really is pretty good. hey sorry if this was answered before... do JetEffects work in Movie Mode in the D2?

sos84bk

Yes, JetEffects work in Movie mode in the D2. I remember that jeteffect doesn't work in movie mode in the A2.

it's funny...it works _sometimes_ and doesn't other times...pretty wierd. but it's good to know that it is working on the D2. another good point to go for the Q5 ;)

if your on the road and have the option to be plugged in and your player is charged... is it better to use ac power in such a case? if its possible? or does it keep charging the battery? what is the best choice in such an option? shouldn’t the ac kick in and not charge the battery say if you put it in a car or something

any thoughts?
