View Full Version : Using DAP in Cold Temps

I am winter camping this weekend and temperatures are predicted to go down to 0 F where I"m camping. I'm debating whether to bring the D2 due to possible condensation problems and because the battery may not work in the extreme cold. I'm also a little paranoid about the digital camera because little condensation water droplets formed inside the camera after my winter camping trip last year. Does anyone have experience with this or advice?
I use my D2 everyday, and it's around -15°C here (5°F) and nothing has happened to it, yet. I do have it in my pocket though, and I'm not out any longer than 30 minutes so I don't know how it would work if you're going to be out a whole weekend.

I've also been using mine in 15 degree temps without problems but I keep it in my pocket. Last year at 4 degrees F my camera would not work until I removed the li ion battery and warmed it up. I believe the D2 has the same type of battery. I'm really more concerned about condensation when I bring it in from the cold.
I can't answer that though, but I'm sure someone else here can do that. A lot of people here seems very well-informed. Good luck!
I've had my X5L battery die until I recharged it when I left it out in my cold car.

Doniago, I'm really more concerned about condensation. If the battery dies, I can just recharge it when I get back from the trip, especially after I condsated my camera big time last year.
battery life is reduces during cold temperatures due to heat loss and entropy energy change, as all chemical reactions as the envirenmental conditions change, the reaction changes, but unless you live in a place where theres constant sub zero temperatures, the difference shouldnt be so important. another issue is quick temperature changes, going from a warm envirenment to a cold one quickly (leaving your house which had the heating on and going to the outside which is extremly cold as an example) could lead to condensadtion, meaning water inside your player, could cause temporary or permemnent damage,
people with harddrive based players should care more, my NW-HD5 sometimes hangs becuase the harddrive dosnt operate very well under 5 degrees C, so during the night or early morning, i get alot of hard drive hangs from the player,
