what annoys me is when people identify the "mp3 player" term as an ipod, and forget the "ipod" is a brand.

my friends know i have an unhealthy interest in DAP's. They're always interested in my latest toys. The D2 has been the one they've liked the most.

Or, once they see this foreign object they just have to whip out their iPod. (It's like, once I see those ubiquitous white earbuds, I know what's coming next.) If I've seen one I've seen 'em all, so what makes them think that theirs is so special?
I like it when I see someone whose mp3 player is anything but an iPod. Sure, iPod owners might be thinking that this person couldn't afford the real thing, but couldn't it be that the non-iPod owner was just thinking outside the box?

the really sad part is once you climb over the mountain of apple hype bullshit, the ipod is actually not a really good mp3 player, bad sound, bad battery life, bad build quality, limited file support, imposed DRM, propietary cables, short life span (even jobs said you should change your ipod once a year)

Well, I agree with most of your opinions in here. But I like it that most of the Apple people lives in their own world where the iPod is a God. It's nice having something different that people react to. :)
hell yes, i feel special having a cowon. i feel like the snob of the audio equipment compared to what my friends have. ;)
One 5th generation iPod user told me, the screen would be to small for him to watch videos, and he would never change to such a cheap imitation...
Btw, the screen is the same size, but has more colors...
an ipod mp3 player is like having a sanyo or a jvc home stereo,
having a cowon, a iriver or an archos is like having bose, herman kardon or nakamichi home entertainment system.

If I ever had an iPod, I would never embarrass myself unhiding it out of my pockets in public. When I was checking reviews and features I crossed my fingers wishing there was something wrong with iPod(s) since I could not bear the idea. Fortunately, it has too much shortcomings.
A company charging %15-20 more just for a color black might be (and probably is) charging more just for even less than a color change.
well, the ipod is a social fenomena, and as all "cool" things, the hype wears down, you see people who bought it just to be cool and those are not exactly people you want to be asociated with,
i remember being in a market, and suddenly the butchers phone rings, she pulls out a motorola V3 razr,
i also remember being on a coffee place, i was in line with a friend of mine, his dad wanted to buy a new computer, his dad going over those crappy computer magazines which usualy publish old news and reviews which are decided by their sponsors insted of their techs, so i told him "you shouldnt read that crap, magazines like those are the reason people buy ipods", and this american guy behind us kind of looks away in shame and hides his Ipod in his pocket..., i almost burst out laughing,
its not the player itself, if apple wanted, the ipod would have 40h battery life, FM radio, support every known audio format and sound like a herman kardon sound system, its the mentality of apple corporation, aslong as its good looking and cool, it dosnt have to be good, and we can impose whatever restriction we want (propietary cables and accesories, crap file support, bad build quality so you have to change it often), there was even a rumor once that they wanted to use a propietary headphone plug so you would have to buy the headphones off apple or a licensed manufacturer (from which apple gets a % off each accesory sold), its just that corporate mentality of "lets screw up to the last cent off them", itunes is a chain and ball on your leg forcing you to use an ipod or lose your music collection, so even when you want out, you have to consider that if you did buy music or converted all your music to itunes format, you will have to trow everything away and start again, losing the time and money you spent on building your collection.

The iPod isn't cool. Has not been since 2004. Apple may like to hip it up but everyone knows everyone else has an iPod. How can that be cool?
It 'just works'. That's why a lot of people buy it these days.
I buy my Cowons to get my greasy-haired nerd on. The posts here perfectly summarises that.

I just read this at a forum I frequent: "My brand new iPod needed to be replaced. They gave me a refurb. That needed to be replaced as well, and I got a second refub which has worked perfectly for nearly two years. Apple Care is worth the investment."
Gosh, I don't mean to be snarky but...whatever happened to three strikes and you're out? Maybe this person really doesn't realize that she/he has plenty of other choices? Oh, well. Different strokes....

Applecare kicks in after the standard warranty. Whoever said it didn't know what they were talking about or were maybe paraphrasing... or even more laughably, trying to be 'in with the cool crowd' by pretending to own an iPod. My God that would be sad, especially given what I said before.
anyone else here thinks that getting a refurb in exchange for a product bought NEW under warranty is a bit of a rippoff ?

I own both a black 8GB iPod Nano 2nd Gen and a Cowon D2, so I should say I can compare them well, which I'm not going to do in detail[biggrin] as they are two different beasts anyway.
If you are just looking for a very easy to use, very compact and good looking & stable player, you should definitely consider the iPod Nano. There is a lot of talk about it, and ofcourse it has shortcomings, like every player.
The Cowon D2 blasts the iPod away in terms of sound quality, battery life and features, but there is also a price to pay: you can't do much without looking at the screen of the player. And it comes with less storage (ofcourse you can add SD memory but that costs money too). Although the overall size looks smaller than the iPod, it is still bulkier than the Apple player, even with a skin on the latter.
I don't think I will use the D2 on my bike, so the Ipod is going to be the workout companion, while the D2 is a real funny play machine[devil]
EDIT: I have to add that no-one with a D2 is going to navigate faster through his/hers music library than an iPod user, I find navigating with the touschreen through long lists a bit of a pain, although it's much better than I thought before buying the D2 ;) But... clickwheel anytime when it comes to this subject!

Lol, you must be joking!. No doubt can i browse quicker then the majority of people who have ipods. I have specific folders, for quick browsing A-Z type artists. Long lists is a breeze, with the fast scrolling using the touch screen. I 100% prefer the touch screen then that bloody clickwheel.

This is really the only way I navigate; and I find that the scroll is fast, sometimes too fast.
I think I might've converted a friend. Out of the blue she said that she was considering a D2 because it's different. Not to discourage her, I reminded her that it doesn't hold as much music as an iPod but she said that she has a Nano(?) that only hold 4gigs, so the D2 wouldn't be a problem.

Im a full album listener. I guess it also comes down to how well you know the GUI and what one needs to click to get to the destination. while the ipod needs various scrolling methods, the D2 can advance to one of my album folder with a few very quick clicks.

"The upcoming iPhone from Apple is a perfect example of how user interfaces will be improved. Apple fans are confident that the company has come up with another slick and intuitive design, just as it did for the iPod." [dots]
Ohhhh man [cursing]. I sent them an email requesting a correction:
"Technically, Apple took the user interface from Creative which then sued Apple for copyright infringement. Apple later settled in the lawsuit with creative, paying them $100 million and agreeing to other terms. I believe this statement, identified in bold, deserves at least an addendum, if not a full blown re-write or deletion."

Like most of the ipod users.....They think that an ipod is the best you can get, i feel sorry for them[unsure]
On the weekends I record music videos from my DVR to my computer, then plop them onto the D2. Everyday in the gym, people are constantly walking behind me when I'm on the elliptical machine so they can gawk at what I'm watching. It's great to see their faces as they tell each other "He's watching videos...." and then they fumble through their players, wishing they had something to watch. I guess you can watch videos on an iPod... it's a matter of the user taking the time to prepare the media. Still, it's humbling to see me tap the screen with my knuckle to see the time, or fast-forward through a song.
I'm always happy to show gym-goers my D2. But only when they ask. More often than not, they're either too embarrassed or too scared to. Go figure [smile]
FWIW I've converted a slew of iPod owners to D2 players. I'm providing my co-workers with all the music videos, and it's nice to see a bunch of D2 owners roaming the work halls. I'm pretty low-key about my player, but my co-workers, all previous iPod owners, are all militant when they point out to their victims that 'THESE ARE NOT IPODS, THESE ARE KOREAN DEVICES! SUPER-ADVANCED STUFF..."
They're too cute. Haha, gotta love the D2!

...this post almost made me cry. Shows how much of a nerd I am seeing how I don't even know these people yet am mad tempted to just hunt them & smack each of them with a hard drive yelling out "COWON SYYYYYYYYYYYDE!!!"
