I just get my D2 yesterday and still very happy with it. But there is one thing that i don't like on the D2. It can't play all MP3 files in 320 kbps or above. The problem is that I have to much MP3 files in 320 kbps and don't want to convert them all. I have a Samsung MP3 Player and it plays the MP3's fine. What's the reason for this and what can I do now?

Sorry for my bad English, cause I'm from Vietnam :p.

It should be able to play them.

This is from the tech specs:
MP3 : MPEG 1/2/2.5 Layer 3, ~320kbps, ~48khz, mono/stereo

Maybe this is related to the other encoding problems people have been having?

search for other problem threads. People have had success with some files after converting them with some software.

Yeah, but I don't want to convert all the 500 songs in 320 kbps :p. Converting a already compression format is also not so goor for the sound [no]

Oh, I completely understand. All my music is in flac format. No lossy formats for me. This way I have a perfect reproduction of the album in case the disk is lost or damaged, and I can always make duplicates and convert them into a more greatly compressed format if I need to.

But, other people here don't mind converting, and would rather do it than not be able to play their files. I just thought I'd throw the option out there. [smile]

How much memory do 1 flac file use? around 30mb? and did you convert the flac from cd or mp3? if it was mp3, is the quality better?
Are you using JetAudio to convert?

For about 25 MB a song. If you read his post, you would know that he convert it from CD's ;).

converting mp3 to flac is useless. youd then have a lossless copy of a lossy file. :<

Exactly. Once the data is eliminated by the MP3 encoder, it cannot be recovered. So, going from MP3 to flac would be pointless.

Yes, I rip directly from my CDs.

Flac files take around 6.5MB per minute of audio. That's around 26MB for a 4 minute song. It's worth it if you ask me. Disk space is cheap nowadays.

I use Linux, so JetAudio is not available to me.

hmm so you bought the cd´s? i download music :) or can i burn on cd then rip to flac? will it be better?

assuming your downloading mp3 files and what to burn them. No; ripping the cds you just made into flac will also be pointless. As they are still origionating from your mp3 format. Best thing is to rip from the origional

I bought the ones that I am referring to, yes. No, it will not be better to burn CDs and then rip them again. This is just transferring data to a CD, and back.

ANY time you convert to a lossy format, and then convert again, you are not going to regain any data lost, but you are also probably going to lose more data. If your music is already in MP3 format, it is not ever going to get any better. Sorry! [smile]

the best way is the old fashion way, EAC with LameDLL, produces the best results, the best ripper combined with the best enconder,

and please remember to use the databse connection and the auto ID3 tagger to make sure your music is properly labeled,

Yepp, damn. Best way is to get people to realize that cd in itself is already a lossy format and that you can tell it's a substantial difference between FLAC and mp3/ogg/wma listening to them side by side. The lossy formats sounds as if they are being played in a tin can in comparison - especially with organic and/or acoustic music. Sound like, in loss of a better expression, shite.

And no, you can't get the data back when it's gone, true.

Personally I think it's absurd that some online stores can sell such a substandard product as the mp3 for full price or that people are being sued for "stealing" a bleek copy of a less bleek copy. It'd make some sense if they'd sell all their music in FLAC and leave it up to the consumer to decide wether or not he/she wants to spoil it.

And lets not even get into the filesharing community with it's massive amounts of 128kbps mp3:s... (rah)

So the only option for me is to convert most of the 320 kbps lossy files in to a smaller lossy format file :(?

That's not what I think these people are doing. Although, I admit, I'm not sure what they are doing.

Here (http://iaudiophile.net/forums/showthread.php?t=12851) is the thread I was referring to. Specifically this (http://iaudiophile.net/forums/showpost.php?p=110394&postcount=5) post.

I not not familiar with that software, or the process they are talking about.

Sorry! I was just trying to point you in a direction that has worked for other people who have had problems with certain files only.

I am not sure what that exact solution entails. [blush]

That's exaclty what I say. The solution is to convert the lossy MP3's to an smaller lossy MP3's. But I don't want that solution because I buy a D2 for playing good quality music files :(.

It's strange that Cowon itself says on the website that it's possible to play 320 kbps MP3 files but it's not true. My cheap-ass 15 euro MP3 player can play the 320 kbps MP3's files very smooth.

I am going to get an X5-60 GB just to be able to have all my archive with me in FLAC format. Well, D2 suports FLAC but even with 4 GB + 4 GB SD card option, 8GB will only hold 25 or 30 albums. If there will be any D2 60 GB [thumbsup] then it will be the best one for sure. :jamming:

Obligation to choose which tracks to have and which ones to leave out, constant management through computer is probably not convenient for everybody.

The D2 is fine playing my Lame mp3s encoded with the insane settings (320kbps CBR) and VBR 320 kbps.
