I downloaded a movie yesterday, but when I tried to play it all I got was a blank screen, too. Then I realized that the movie I was trying to view didn't have "avi" as its file extension but "mpg." So, I did it again making sure that during the conversion, the file extension was avi.
I watched the movie today! [biggrin]

this also happened to me in my testing but I don't remember what I did to cause the problem and then fix it. It has to do with how your file was encoded prior to bringing it into the JetAudio transcoder. if you're still having this problem, describe your steps from start to finish? I'm sure we can help you.
if its helpful to you or anybody else, my method which is proving to be very successful is:
1. Rip the DVD to vob files
2. Use TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress (http://tmpgenc.pegasys-inc.com/en/product/te4xp.html) to encode the file as an MPG with the following settings
- make size, color and audio adjustments
- Video: leave original size & frame rate. Set Bitrate to 8000 Kb/s
- Audio: 48000 sample rate, 128 Bitrate
3. Import that file into JetAudio and simply use their AVI (XVid/MP3) D2 512Kb preset
Vids come out sync'd and simply stunning.
TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress might be pricey to some but the level of control you are given by this software there is nothing better on the market right now. It gives you tons of output file types so if you find that MPG is not working for you, you can export as Divx, or WMV or whatever. Also this software gives you total control over the file properties such as cropping, color correction, audio adjustment..and much more. Don't mean to sound like a salesman but been using their software for years and I always get compliments on my digital files. This software is my secret. :)
One final note, if you have a slower, older computer, while you are encoding, leave your computer alone. Close any apps that might be running in the background. Allow your processor to be 100% available to the encoding. If not, this could effect your audio track sync'ing to video.
follow up: over the night I batch encoded a bunch of video. This morning I copied 5 45 minute clips to my SD card. The first clip audio track played but no video. The other 4 tracks played as expected. All 5 clips where encoded as described in my earlier message. So, maybe something happened in the copy to the SD card? I deleted the first clip from the SD card and then re-copied to the card again. Bingo! Now it is playing correctly. Have no earthly idea why this happened..but thought I'd report it to the group.

redman I have a question...Why can't you just convert the vob file right away with jetaudio? Why do you first convert it with TMPGEnc and then convert it with jet? Won't the quality be the same since your using jet to convert it anyway.
I don't have the D2 yet but I have jetaudio vx but I've used it to convert my dvd files to avi. But not for the D2 yet....but if I want quality I use divx pro...but that would seem a waste if your gonna use jet to convert it anyway.
Let me know why...thanks..[smile]

Thats a really good question. [blink] Probably because I did not think I could just simply import my VOBs into JetAudio! DOH! I'll give that a shot right now. That would be awesome to be able to remove a step from my conversion process.
Thanks Tabv!!! [biggrin]
redman let me know if it works...I know when I used it I had to do each dvd file separately...but I think in the ripper there is a way set it to just make one big vob file...not real sure though..thanks
I've only used jet a few times to do this and it worked but I haven't used it much...I mostly use Divx pro.
I use DVD Decrypter (http://www.mrbass.org/dvdrip/) to rip my VOBs. So far its the best ripper I've found. You can change settings to rip as one entire VOB and with movies, that should work like a champ. My question is how it will handle TV Shows. I'm waiting for a batch to finish at the moment and as soon as its done, I'll test it on a movie and a TV show dvd. I do know now that a VOB can be imported into JetAudio since a VOB is an MPEG II file...MPEGs are compatiable with JetAudio. I'll leave another note once I've tried a couple files.
Ok, as of my first test, it does not work. I can rip the VOB. I can change the VOB extention to MPG and the file plays fine in my MPG software player. Change extention back to VOB (or leave it MPG) import into JetAudio and it appears no problems. Soon as I start the transcoding, Jet finishes in a second with no error messages leaving me with a file that plays nothing. Original VOB is 7 GB and JetAudio file is 163KB of a black screen. So, at this point..no go but I'll continue playing with the options.
On the question of TV shows on DVD, ripping one complete VOB just puts them all together. I need them stripped apart. So for this, I think I will have to continue with the VOB > MPG > D2 AVI conversion process. And unless we can figure out how to go from VOB to D2 AVI, it might be necessary for that middle step for all vids.
If anybody else has a faster process and is getting perfect, crisp, sharp video, please let us know.
Redman I don't have the D2 yet but I have jet vx with all the converting pulldown menus...
I also have dvddecrypter....let me know exactly what setting in jet you use to convert the vob file for the D2 that way I can see if it works for me...because I've used jet to convert vob files for me before and it worked but I do remember a few times I had problems...so let me know.
redman I seen the post above where you said what setting you used for converting to the D2...I'm trying it now...

Try FairUse Wizard:

I tried DVD Decrypter. The video quality was REALLY crisp, but the sound was just a little bit out of sync...just a little.
I don't have the D2 yet, but I've been converting some of my DVD videos for my U3 and I've done a few for the D2 (preparing for when I get it). Not sure if the D2 videos will work for sure, but I'm fairly certain they will. All of my video encodes for the U3 are working flawlessly so I would think the D2 videos will be fine, since I'm using the same procedures.
First, I use DVD decrypter to copy the video from disc to computer
Then I use AVI.net to encode the .vob files to .avi files
Then I use JetAudio to convert the .avi to a U3 or D2 compliant .avi file
AVI.net is freeware, you can do a search on it to download.
I too have tried to encode .vob files with JetAudio to U3 and D2 .avi files, and the videos have picture with static noise.
So far all the videos I've encoded work with my U3, so some of you may want to try it for the D2. My D2 videos play fine on my computer - just waiting to order my player so I can toss these on .
Hope my info helps someone :)

I use DVD Decrypter only to rip the VOBs. I then use TMPEnc 4.0 Xpress to compress it to an MPG. and then that MPG into JetAudio. If you are watching your VOB file and noticing its out of sync, it could just be an issue of computer resources playing the 7GB file. Thats a lot of bandwidth to pump through even for a beefed up machine. If you compress it to something smaller, you should see the sync work perfectly from your computer.
Hope my info helps someone :)
Thanks Keal. Reading your method and knowing what I'm doing, it appears that in order to get the best quality video and audio, it is a 3 step process no matter what software you use.
DVD rip > uncompressed encode > JetAudio D2 transcode
Doesn't seem to be a short cut from dvd rip to JetAudio transcode. This takes longer but I don't mind because of the results I am getting. Of corse I am impatient but the video is the best of any portable device I have tried.

Who said you need jetAudio?

JetMall.net of corse. [unsure] I kinda thought there must be another way to get video compressed correctly for this device. Is FairUse Wizard all you use to compress for D2?

Lots of video converters can produce Xvid+Mp3 avi's. I convert videos for my U3 without jetAudio.

Working on it right now.. :)
Having some problems just ripping the dvd with FU Wiz. I'll have to get back to testing a bit later with this software. Based on what you said Max, it occured to me that I should be able to install the Xvid codec and use my software (TMPGenc) and just DVD Rip > TMPGenc and be done. I did that but the video on the D2 would only play the audio track and no video. I am beginning to think that the codec on the device itself might not be the most current? Thats why some people are getting black screen vids?
Based on what you said Max, it occured to me that I should be able to install the Xvid codec and use my software (TMPGenc) and just DVD Rip > TMPGenc and be done.
Then you should learn about Xvid settings. There are lots of them, and some may break hardware compatibility.
redman, I used jetaudio to convert a dvd file to the D2 setting you tried..it worked fine...but it's in 3 different parts...it was an hour and a half movie and it took about 30 minutes. I had to name each file differently with a #1, #2, #3 at the end of it.
I did try another movie I had and had a simalar problem you had...it seemed the actual dvd file had some kind of weird freeze in it and it caused jet to mess up...so I think it depends on the dvd file.
I know there's other programs you can use without using jet but like max said you have to know all the settings.
AutoGK is a free program that will do it but I never tried it...

so it seems that Jet works sometimes and not other times..depending on the DVD file? I'm going to spend some time testing and learning about all the Xvid settings to see what I can come up with. Right now, my final product on the D2 is amazing but it takes a bit to long. So if I could get it down to a rip and Xvid encode, I'd be very happy. Thanks for taking your time to test out the JetAudio VOB encoding.

No problem, I'm also doing it for myself because I'll be getting one when the 4gb comes out...so I'll be ready when it comes..[biggrin]
Let us know how things work out..
I ripped some .vob files off of a couple DVDs and tried converting them directly to D2 and U3 videos with JetAudio. One of the clips came out perfect (a first for me) and the other 3 clips all had video, but static noise for audio.
I found a setting that fixed the audio, so for those of you with D2 players, try this out in JetAudio:
Go to "Convert Video"
In that window, add the video(s) you want to convert
Click the "Options" button on the right side
Click the "Advanced" tab on the top
Uncheck the "Use Certified Filters only for blahblahblah"
click OK
Convert the video and test
If this works for .vob files, then we've got our 2-step conversion going on!
The clips I've converted for U3 and D2 all have video and sound when I play them back on the computer. The U3 files all play on the player. Now if someone can test this out on their D2 :)

Thanks Keal. I'll give this a try as soon as I can. Hope it works. Right now I'm ripping a lot of TV shows and it seems I can't do it this way. Next movie I rip, I'll follow your steps. Hope it works.

Just a question: if you have for example a *.avi file, in which format does the software of Cowon convert the file (to read it on the d2)? In mp4 or something else?
Btw, the "official" price of the 2 gigs D2 decreased from 269 to just 229 and the 4 gigs from 319 to 179 euros!
http://www.generationmp3.com/index.php/2007/01/28/5318-le-prix-du-cowon-d2-deja-en-baisse
JetAudio, Cowon's software, converts to .avi (which are XviD or DivX) and .wmv for playback on the D2.

Great, I hope it works out when you try the conversions!

I've only converted to .avi files using JetAudio, but like redman mentions, it also converts to .wmv, too. The reason why you have to convert your .avi files with JetAudio (to either .avi or .wmv) is because the videos have to be a certain size to play on the D2. So you can basically create .avi files with other programs if you know the correct specs, but JetAudio just simplifies it since there's automatic settings for converting to D2 format :)

Have you tried my 1-step solution for U3? (sorry for offtopic)

Unstable results. went through your steps and it looked like it was going to work. It encoded about 1 minute of the VOB, ended as if nothing was wrong and asked if I wanted to copy to the D2. Back to the drawing board. Still need to work more with FU Wizard and exploring Xvid Codec settings per Max.
Darn :( Thanks for trying it out, though :)

It was curious actually. The VOB could be imported and would only encode a minute or 2 and then JetAudio said it was done with no errors. When I imported that same VOB into my TMPenc software, it read the file the same way..only a minute or 2 long. BUT...when I changed the extention to MPG and played that file with WinDVD...it played its full length. I tried to import the changed file extention version into JetAudio and TMPenc and still same results..it only reads the file as a minute or two long.

No, but I'll check the U3 forum for your post and I'll give it a try, thanks!

I've been encoding music videos off of my DVDs and they all seem to come out OK, but I haven't tried a whole movie. I've tried to extract chapters of movies with DVD Decrypter just for testing, but there's no audio in the resulting .vob files. I'll try encoding a whole movie to see if it works :)
