View Full Version : About the Line Out on D2
Hello everybody,[smile]
I am new here, I've been thinking to buy a new MP3 player for a long time, I have an iPod at the moment, the quality of sound is not good by the way, I read a lots of review, finally I really like the D2, I am thinking I will get one. But I still get a question to ask, because I will mostly use this player in my car via a line out cable and I got my own amplifier there, so I am just wondering can I do the line out with D2 rather than a earphone jack?
Thank You. [help]

The D2 doesn't have a line-out jack, so you'll just have to make do with the unit's earphone jack instead.

It has audio and video TV out? Am I right? If it does couldn't you use that?
What is the difference between audio and line-out jack?
Quality or just the cable?

You are right, except, there would be really no point as you would first have to buy the TV-out cable, plus an adapter (assuming you didn't have one to begin with) to convert the RCA left and right audio channel to a single earphone jack, which pretty much brings you back to the earphone jack to begin with.

The line-out jack is generally a better way to feed an external amp. You don't have to mess around with two sets of volume controls. The cable is irrelevant.
Thank you, guys. [biggrin]
May be I am just gonna use the earphone jack. But I think if there is a line out that would be great, as we will get better sound quality from our own amplifier. [thumbsup]
Wow, this unit really doesn't have a line-out jack. That is a disappointment for me as I was looking to get one soon, mostly for use in my car where the line-out is really helpful. I don't think the ear headphones will cut it unless someone has knowledge of it. Will it be completely flat sounding on my speakers.

I have a Iriver h340 that has a line out and a headphone jack, i cant tell the difference in sound quality in my car the volume is the same for both too.
the iriver H3xx does not have a true lineout, it is still attenuated like the headphone out. players like the ZVM and ipod benefit greatly from the lineout option, they have it exactly as neoxerxes said. its a direct digital feed untouched by the ipods pre-amp.
Let me get this straight...ok there is a headphone output...and there is a TV out which is the audio or video out or both.
Isn't the audio and video out (not the headphone out) considered a line out??
Is there yet another output that is not on this player?...
I'm mostly into home audio so maybe I'm missing something?
Could someone explain this to me?
The A/V out cable looks to be what neoxerxes needs to go directly to the amp. Jetmall doesn't seem to have the cable in stock, yet, though.
The specs on the player doesn't specify if it's a direct digital out, but it would be odd if it wasn't. The D2 just screams to be used in a car :)

Yes, but the difference is in the unique connectors as well probably some simple electronics behind it. When people talk about line-out on a player, you can be certain they are talking about an audio-out connector (which is usually located next to the earphone jack) which is supposed to connect exclusively to another jack that is of the same size of the earphone jack. Cowon has a TV-out cable that is to be used exclusively for output to a TV that has a left channel (the white RCA connector), right channel (the red RCA connector) and a video (the yellow RCA connector) connector. In terms of audio-out, one connection is an earphone-like jack that takes the stereo channel as one connector, whereas the RCA type connector splits the stereo channel into two separate channels.

Not to be a trouble maker and God knows I freakin love the D2 but while trying to solve how to do this with the D2 I think there is another fundamental question before that. Your goal here?
If you only want to have a device to pump out audio to your car and nothing more, I kinda gotta disagree with you that the iPod is not a good solution. The iPod is the perfect solution, imho. There is so much support for hooking your pod to your car audio system that its nearly seemless. There are many decks out that will control your pod as well. So you plug it in and forget about it the pod itself. It stays charged and drive the pod through your deck.
If quality of audio is the issue that is easily resolved by correcting your encoding settings. You can rip your CDs at such a high rate of accuracy that you'll never hear the difference between CD and mp3.
So, not trying to turn you away from the D2 but ... unless your goals go beyond simply audio playback, you might be making more work for yourself then you need. D2 rocks but if its only used as an mp3 player its being seriously under-utilized.

Just thinking, my car head unit (stereo, deck, whatever) has an RCA/phono input in the back of it. What about yours? if this is the case then surely you just need the TV out cable and an RCA extension to take the feed behind your dashboard and into the input at the back of your deck. Problem solved.
(just make sure its an input and not an output for an amp in your car!)

You don't need their TV out cable. Just buy a male to male/female rca splitter, that has one end as the single stereo plug for the D2 and then other end split into the two red and white male/female ends. Then plug the opposite rca splitter into the AUX input of your head unit, assuming you have an AUX input. Set your source on the head unit to the AUX setting and away you go. So for a very small amount of money you can do this immediately and not wait for their TV cable. But if you have a factory installed radio its a really good bet you don't have the AUX input on your head unit. That is usually an aftermarket feature.

What I meant was if the TV out red and white leads were actually true line outs then this would be preferable to using the headphone out.
Sorry for the confusion.

No worries! [biggrin] Just wanted to point out that we probably don't have to wait for the TV Out cables if the goal is to simply output audio. I'm sure their TV out cable will cost significantly more then a simple RCA splitter.
I hope they have some sort of clear case and hopefully the A/V out cable available when the 4GB hits Jetmall, and not have us wait a couple months for accessories :(
I use both my D2 and a "14.50 Euro rubbish MP-3 player" on my car stereo and I can't tell the difference. Okay, my car stereo is just average, but I guess for most of us it doesn't make a difference how you hook up your D2 to the car stereo.
When connecting it to your quality home stereo the question of how to connect it seems relevant to me.
Since the line/tv out cable is expensive (and probably hard to get) I haven't tried it.
Does anyone have experience with this? I mean is it worth to consider the line-out cable?

Not for line-out to your car stereo. The TV-out cable can't be used for music, just for videos on the D2.

"I have a bad feeling about this."
I've seen an add on http://www.soleta.nl/tv-out-kabel-iaudio-d2-p-76.html that offers an TV/Audio out cable for the D2.
It says (in Dutch): "TV Out Kabel iAudio Cowon D2
Met iAudio Cowon D2 TV Out kabel kunt u beeld en geluid vanaf uw D2 op uw TV scherm afspelen."
So, it says picture and sound on your tv screen. It costs ~ 18 euro, transport not included.
Obviously it will not be possble to use this cable together with the power supply.
Is it be possble to use a generic USB power supply using the bigger USB connector and still use the D2 in player mode?
Then I would use this cable to get the picture & sound out of the D2.

Hi Nemesis,
So, it says picture and sound on your tv screen.
If you use this cable to display videos from the D2 on your TV screen, of course you will hear the sound of the videos too. But there is no dedicated line-out function for music files on the D2. Still you can use the earphone jack as an audio line-out.
Is it be possble to use a generic USB power supply using the bigger USB connector and still use the D2 in player mode?
No, simultaneous using and charging of the D2 is only possible with the power supply connected to the smaller connector. You have to press the "M" button to turn on the D2. If you're looking for audio line-out only, use the power supply and an adapter cable connected to the earphone-out.
Hope this helps.

Ben

Thanks Ben,
Then I'll not be buying this cable for audio output. I’ll continue to use the phone jack output which works well, expect that I’ve to adjust the volume every time.
Once I was stupid to switch it on using my earphones at volume 45 (Amp volume). That was not a good idea. Since then I use a fade in of 3 seconds, that’s enough to get the plugs out when making this mistake.
It only makes sense for video output I guess. Unfortunately they're a bit expensive.
Best Regards and Greetings from Holland,
Nemesis
