This is my first time looking for a video player. the unit looks incredible, i was just about to pull the trigger. (jetmall wont ship to Toronto, so im having it shipped to a buddy in Michigan)

but this photo caught my attention.

i just realized the screen is a measly 2.5" which is TINY. it's nice that this unit is compact, BUT if i were to use it for watching Movies (not just short clips), then i dont think it will be sufficient. I think all the other features are great, but now im not sure if it's worth $200USD.

Q: for those who have experience with videos on small screens such as this 2.5", do you think it's sufficient to watch movies while traveling?

I don't own either but I'm sure there is a lot of people that own the Creative vision and iPod video that could answer this question, since they have the same size screen as the Cowon D2.

It's quite tiny yes. The screen I see when I convert the video is even bigger (I measured it :P). The subs are just readable. I'm not sure yet if I will watch movies on it but I hope so.

oh shoot, thanks for pointing that out. since i've seen the ipod video and am satisfied with its size, i'll buy the d2.

IMO its an okay size to watch a 2 h movie....
But I watched a movie on an 1.8 inch screen, and that really made my eyes wanna sleep ;)
so I think its not like big screen TV but it will work...
One Question for those of you who have the player:
Can you zoom in while watching in case you watch a wide screen movie, or is it possible to zoom in the movie with the software before converting the movie?

i own a ZVM which is also a 2.5 inch screen. Watching short clips, it's really not that bad, and as long as you get into it, you pretty much forget the fact that it's a really small screen.

plus, with the storage available, i doubt you'll be watching too many full-length movies anyways.

I noticed this /\ at my 1.8 inch camcorder screen, also when my eyes bleeded because it was an Wide screen movie so it was even smaller but it worked ;)

The thing is cb1021, what you outlined is a tradeoff between two devices: of course the D2, and the A2 (and devices in the same line coming after it). One needs to ask themselves (which I did incidently while choosing my next player) what are you going to be doing and how much bulk is going to be an issue? If you want something that will comfortably fit in your pocket, and you'll end up using the player moreso for music or short clips anyway, it's going to be at the expense of storage space. If you want to take around with you tons of content (30GB), want to watch plenty of movies at a size that won't strain your eyes too much, but can put up with the fact it will look a little silly if seated in your front shirt pocket, then the D2 is naturally going to be a better choice. For me, I decided that I will be mostly listening to music and also watching a video now and again. The D2 seems to be the sweet spot in this case.

I have the solution for you. YOu can get the Cowon Q5 which is twice the size at 5" or the A3 at 4". If this is not enough ( I suspect that still might be too small) there are 7" models or go with a 15" laptop. They are so cheap now that you could get one under $800. I agree with you, the screen is small but i don't think people will really be using it as their primary movie screen. It's to catch a flick you missed on TV last night or a video clip someone sent you.

Seriously dude, get a laptop.....

Actually that 2.5" screen will be a nice upgrade for me. My first PMP, the Mpio One, has a 1" screen. [sad]

I think the Q5 is to big to fit in a pocket it maybe work to carry around on your belt.
But a laptop with 15" screen is not useful as an mp3 player...

A laptop will play mp3s. I did not say it will be portable nor fashionable. I am just stating the point that for anyone who thinks the D2 is too small to watch videos, there are alternatives. Let's be honest here. The reason people go to the movies is to watch a movie on a GIANT screen. Big screen TV's are. the crave now. However for portability, a small screen is acceptable and the D2 is great for what it was designed for. It's small, it is supposed to be small, if not Cowon would design a laptop for mp3's and movies. I think the D2 is well designed and considering the X5 has a 1.8 screen this would be an upgrade.

hey mate,

i understand the D2 is not a portable theater experience. But there IS a difference between being able to watch movies and not being able to. from that i've read and comparing to the Ipod Video which i've seen, the D2 is fine for my movie watching uses. :)
