Hello all
Oh my god, Cowon really wants my money, and they might get it, to the desperation of my girlfriend.
Currently the proud and satisfied owner of an A2, I would see the Q% as a nice upgrade.
It looks fantastic, and one day or another, I'll nee a sat-nav system in the car.
My only concern is about the size. It's slightly bigger than the A2, and is it going to be too big? Time will tell.
Do we know when it's going to be available?
Have a nice day
Stephane
check out the size
its maybe "bigger"
but its thinner!
A2 22mm
Q5 20mm
and the other sides not so drastically bigger! [excited]
anyway, i have to find some one who will want my A2 now
damn i will have to sell it for cheap :\
**** i will have to change the nick to Q5phile

Does anyone know if the Q5 will have audio in like the A2 (judging from the specs it doesnt), thats the best thing in there. I record so much with mic.......... i assume the Q5 would be like the A2 but with bigger screen..... hope battery rocks....

Also, I don't see anthing about any recording modes in the specs.
Not that I would miss it all that terribly, just a heads-up to other people.
I finally recorded something off the TV - in fact, from a VHS tape - for the first time, a full year after I bought my A2! [rofl]
looks good. Gotta love the screen. Cowon's doing well with touch controls.
CES Pics. Seems to me that the Q5 is a More powerful , larger version of the new D2

hmmm........it looks like the Q5 is not gonna be pocket-friendly.
i will probably buy this when it's available. what would change that to "i will definitely..." is the battery. as others have asked, i'm dieing to know if it a.) has a removable battery and b.) what is the battery life?
i was about -> <- close to buying the new archos 504 before i remembered ces was this week and decided to wait. the archos has everything i'm looking for except codec support, which the cowon has in spades (i have an x5l currently, but the batteries are dieing a slow death).
I really wouldn't expect it to have a removable battery.

I will be buying this in about a year or so, especially if they offer 80gb or 100gb HD sizes. Perfect for airplane trips and the fact that it can be used as GPS just makes it that much more awesome
I would say "Now I wish I hadn't bought my GPS a month or two ago," but my GPS is also the only reason I didn't miss a flight on Xmas (traffic in New York = teh suck), so...no, I don't wish that. :)
Of course, offering a GPS and offering a _good_ GPS are two different things.
and with the touch screen we definitely needs IS right away with it :P
so, the a3 has vob support but not this?
:?
well, we have the firmware development ahead of us, cowon won't fail us in that aspect hopefully :P

one thing to remember is vob support could be added with the right add on software since this is running windows CE. Then there is VLC beta player for windows CE.

How does the whole HSDPA support thing work, can i just slip in a sim and use it for browsing.
Im guessing not, maybe bluetooth transfer, but then why would you need hsdpa support. Either way, i have unlimited data with my phone, i can just synch it up the Q5 and browse and download podcasts to my hearts content.
Love it, want one.

Im guessing there would be an optional add-on card or something like that for hsdpa.

too bad it is only HSDPA(2.5G) and not umts(3G) hell even EDGE(2.75G) support would be better.

Eh? Last time i looked, HSDPA is 3.5g. 1.4mb basic all the way up to 14mbps.

my mistake I assumed HSDPA was 2.5g. I must have read it wrong.
likewise, no MKV or OGM support for the Q5 as far as we know. Those two formats would be awesome. Hopefully that's fixable by firmware.

I think we'll come to see these other features in firmware upgrades. Its not suprising that they would concentrate their resources on what makes the Q5 different from their other players.
I can't see any reason why OGM wouldn't be supported on this unit.

Also, I noticed that another player (forget the name... its one released in europe, methinks) has the ability to boot from 2 operating systems, via 2 different power buttons. WinCE and Linux.
I wonder if this device could have those capabilities as well? Thoughts?

I think what will be interesting is the firmware update schedule for this device seeing as it runs Win CE and usually those updates usually only fix bugs and rarely add more features. This is based on the 4 years I have been(and still) using pocket pc devices.

I'm not exactly sure what is supposed to be so great about this thing running Windows CE. My lifetime of experience with other Microsoft software has been a mixed bag, to say the least. In fact, I recently got so tired of their WGA badgering (over a legitimately purchased XP disk, btw) that I switched to Ubuntu and haven't looked back. I love that my X5 has no compatibility issues with my new OS. The Q5 looks like an awesome gadget, but I am definitely no MS fan and am not happy about them getting a backdoor back into my life.
Bottom line, can anyone give me anything positive about Win CE and tell me how it's not going to interfere with my use of this player?

I'm with you on this. I think it's a great bit of hardware, but I have no faith in the software side of things.
That's why I'm going to do my damndest to get Linux installed on there. It runs on many similar Alchemy-based devices, so it shouldn't be too hard to get it running there.
We seem to be drifting a bit off-topic here, and this thread is 3 pages long as-is.
If people could either keep future posts on-topic or start new threads, that would be a help.
Thanks folks!

I'm guessing that the GPS (optional) part shows the fluctuation in price (i.e. no GPS is the low price point 450/550 and GPS is 500/600)? Anyone know for sure? Or do you need an optional thing for it?

Yes,it requires an external GPS antenna

just watch the ces vid and it seems that little slot above the usb port would accommodate a sim very nicely.
they say in the vid that the rca looking port is for hsdpa but thats for gps, and the spec sheets says 'HSDPA Modem' not that it supports modem, meaning that hopefully its built in.
heres hoping. cant wait to get me hands on the little blighter.

I rather doubt it'll be in the 400 dollar range.
am new here...joined this forum in anticipation of the Q5. I'm an Archos 604 user and have in mind to get the Q5.
Does anyone know if the Q5 supports flash & java?
jontupper

Not sure, but I think its the 704wifi that doesn't support java or flash. bleh.
yep...archos doesnt.....sad

Yeah you are right. It will be more. Electronics are expensive to make. If not in korea the export and taxes and FCC fees will drive up the cost. That is why most Korean and Japanese hi tech gear never make it to USA. I have friends who visit Japan and when they see the stuff available they cry. Yeah they cry that they don't have enough money to buy one of everything they find. Ultra slim cameras, tiny mp3 players, hand held GPS that looks futuristic. USA has very high standards for electronics. You know why....nothing that can hinder or interfere with military frequencies or medical or emergency frequencies. It's cool though, once you can live with phones designed by Moses 3500 years ago in Egypt.

My first thought on the two price sets were the HD size (30 vs 60), but maybe GPA also plays into it...

I'm not exactly sure what the gps situation will be. There was a guy on here who said he had one of those model units without the software, and if I recall correctly, he said the gps module was built in.
Maybe they won't even release a non-gps version, depending on how expensive the receivers are for them to install... they might just make it standard... it sure would give them an edge over the competition.
too bad they still don't got removalable batterys..
Any word if it supports APE?

if i were to guess, i would say the wifi and bluetooth will be built in for US models. the GPS will be part of an optional home/ car craddle with maps loaded on the Q5.
as for hsdpa, thats anyones guess.
hello guys can q5 make calls and can we add sim card in that as it uses gprs too thats not to be so brillinat
Apparantly a Mod on an Archos forum says this picture is how we will access hsdpa via a dongle (or what ever they are called) at an extra cost of us$200, comments!
If true would this put you off?
Yes well know this but hoping that it's just the korean version, and that the EU and American version will have built in at no extra cost. And even if not, there is no way that it would cost $200 to buy a dongle.

Thats the Korean WiFi module. I have heard that WiFi and possibly hsdpa may well be built in for US release (Rumor)

I think it all depends on how this windows is supporting external devices. In Europe, you can get from the mobile phone operators an external GSM connection for usage of the service with notebooks, etc. And they connect via USB.
Hess and Kiwi, this is my point that dongle isnt the wifi one its hsdpa or its a combination of both, yes it has been mentioned the wifi and bluetooth will be integrated, but look closely at the pic I posted it holds a sim card, but as dasber mentioned this it the only way to connect to the net away from a wifi connection. So my point is factor in addition costs to browse away from a wifi connection.
That pic displayed, the dongle states "802.11g" which is mainly used for wireless networking, so ..........

Yup but the top bit near the usb has a window where im told the sim card goes.
Can any people that read Korean confirm this!
I read the battery times are:
14h Music
7h Video
But assuming most of us aint just gonna be doing that, im sure we will be browsing the net, msn and all using all the other addons, the battery life will be much less.
can we make calls from this device plz respond immidiately
a reply will come when someone knows.
I doubt you will be able to make calls with the device. and i hope they keep it that way, its a pmp and should stay a pmp

Nope, not directly from the device. As I mentioned before, I'm not sure about the possibilities of something like Skype?
