View Full Version : What is the attraction of the D2 for you?

I was initially hanging out for the A2 when it was going quite cheap, like now. But, when I saw the dimensions and functionality via the three hands-on previews presented, I thought the D2 actually fit my requirements better. I thought the A2 would be a good choice because it had an excellent lineup of features and frequent firmware updates. Album art, ability to play videos on a nice screen, and having the ability to read comics was also a winner for me. However, there have been quite a few users of the A2 saying that they started to use the unit a lot more for music than video (in which case an iAudio X5 would have been a better choice), which also probably means the player would be too bulky for the application.
At one point I wanted an X5, but also wanted to watch the occasional video (a unit of course not suited for significant video playback). So, I was beginning to sway between the two because size was becoming an issue for me. So, I think people, that Cowon has decided to create a unit for those users who want a sorta in between for the A2 (and even the A3) and the X5. From what I have gathered from specs and previews, I believe that Cowon wanted to create a fairly slimline player with tons of features, but offering adequate memory space for such a small sized player (i.e. 8GB or more space, depending on you storage requirements).
I guess what I'm trying to say is why would you get the D2 over other current or upcoming products (e.g. the A3)?

The main reason I like it is because it's size. It fits in your pocket (A2 does 2 but its very bulky) and you don't notice it. Neverteless it has a big enough screen to watch a series like 24. This is a reason why I want it so I can see an episode in the train (every day almost 2 hours in train).
The features come as a plus. But I like the tv-out cable for example (bit dissapointed that its optional).
Design. Many people don't like the design. Well I do. The design isn't too striking, but it hasn't got to be for me. This way there goes more attention to the screen (witch you can customize a lot).
I like it. Extra features I'd like it to have are:
- More video file support
- 1 extra customizable button
- additions like the cable standard
- SDHC support

*I like the quality of the screen, and its size is quite correct.
*Lot of functionalities
*FM radio: I dont even imagine an audio player without radio (thats why I'll perhaps never buy an Archos!)
*the size of the device
What I dont like:
*expensive device: thats why Im hestitating with the MEizu Mini player!

That's another thing why I'm interested in the D2; more video codecs and SDHC support is going to be likely because of frequent firmware updates Cowon is well known for.

Unlike the Meizu unit, the D2 allows you to increase your memory capacity. I was actually thinking of getting that unit too, but the D2 will be superior than it in basically every other way.

Yes, its indeed a very interesting point. And another problem with the meizu: the FM radio is disabled in devices sold in Europe, so you have to change the firmware to have it, but then you loose your warranty!

Maybe an oftopic question but I'll ask it anyway. Is the volume limited? I thought Europe had some rules about that. That's because I do want to use my 2* 37mW.

Have you guys seen the Clix 2 (http://www.generationmp3.com/index.php/2007/01/09/5134-ces-2007-video-et-photos-des-nouveautes-iriver-dont-les-w10-unit2-et-clix2-aka-u20).
It's a thinner version of the clix, with the following features: 2,4" @30fps MPEG4 and WMV. max 8GB.
I think it will be a hard competitor for the Cowon D2. Do you think it will support MPEG4 with higher resolution than 320 240 (so you don't have to encode).
The D2 is still better :), But maybe the AMOLED screen on Clix2 is better than the QVGA screen on D2.
i think the iriver w10 is also a competitor due to the fact that it has a touch screen. But the resolution is just crazy. 3 inch wide screen display 480 x 272 pixels!!

whoa! Thank goodness they thought about upping the frame rate to 30fps.
The new clix looks yummy! If only it had expandable memory via sdhc/cf it would be a SERIOUS compeptitor to the D2.
But did you notice on one of the devices the video on the player kept freezing - where as on the d2 it is very smooth, you can even run other applications at the same time!
what do you all think?
But the resolution is just crazy. 3 inch wide screen display 480 x 272 pixels!!
I went into J&R recently and saw a... device with 4.5 inch screen, 1024x600 pixels. Now that was crazy!
The device turned out to be a tiny vaio computer by sony. I started Internet Explorer there, but it was absolutely impossible to read at that resolution, hehe... :)

the W10 would be nice, but I think the price will be surely higher than than the D2!
The clix2 is nice..but no touch screen...and looks a little wider in length than the D2 although the thinness I like. And I've seen conflicting reports but I believe it has a 2.2 inch screen not a 2.4: compared to D2's 2.5 inch. And I don't think it has TV out.

The W10 is sweet but way to big to carry around...looks about the size of the new iphone..much wider in length then the D2.
When I first started looking for a new mp3 player, I wanted something smaller than an 5th Generation iPod, but with a screen to watch videos on, so I found the Meizu M6, and after a while I figured out, this is the probably best thing I can find for that price (189.99). I watched all these review videos on youtube, and read allthose reviews I were able to find. One day, at youtube, i found this video about a player named Cowon D2, reviewd by generationmp3.com, so kept on looking for videos, I found 3 other videos, the videos made by Kevin K. I was pretty impressed when I saw the specs:
- sd card slot
- 30 frames per second
- 2.5" 16Mil color touch screen
- more than 50h battery life

i love the idea of SD expandability. there are always deals going on for SD flash memory. 1gb for free after rebate are actually not too rare if you look around.
the thing i don't like about the clix is the use of MicroSD memory. i don't like those. at all. though 8gb of internal memory is nice.
they both have UMS which is cool. but i never really liked the D-style browsing method anyways. cool, but the D2 was the one that really grabbed my attention.
