Hey guys, I was looking for some X5 news from Cebit on the internet and I found this on several german websites.

http://www.mpex.net/news/archiv/00539.html

My german is a bit mhhhh..... rusty so that's what I've understand so far.

The X5 is 10 x 7 x 14 mm big, and weights 148g (including the battery).

There will be two variant of the X5, one called X5 (the one as we know) and the X5L which is the X5 with 35h of battery life. For both of them there will be a 20GB and a 30GB, and there will also be 60GB model but for the X5 only. The difference of thickness between the X5 and the X5L is only about 5mm.

It will ship in Europe (in Germany at least) in April with the price tag of 349Euro for the X5 20GB, 379Euro for the X5 30GB, 499Euro for the X5 60GB. As for the X5L variant, it will be 389Euro for the X5L 20GB and 419Euro for the X5L 30GB.

There are also some info about the A2 on the website but I'm kinda lazy to translate that too, so if anyone is interested in the A2 please translate it and post it in the A2 category.

Man, I'm sooooo excited now !

EDIT: Forgot to mention that it plays back MPEG-4 files.

So... X5 20GB should be around 400$ in US right? I mean, they're always cheaper here...

Should show up pretty soonnn.

Fido
03-11-2005, 18:05
That should be 100 x 70 x 14 mm. If that's true then it's about a cm wider than the M3.
So far we've been calling the long life one the M5L, that would make it easier to distinguish between a color and non color screen, so I'm not too sure about it being called the X5L.
Does it say which one is the thicker one? Hopefully the X5, I want the M5L.
If they should get it in germany in april, that should mean the US will get it sooner right?

€349, that's a nice price. A Dutch mailorder company sells it already for €499

I very much doubt that thickness. I mean the M3 is 14mm thick, and it doesn't have a hump protruding out the front. If its true though, awesome!

Hi I'm new to this forum. I'm from Germany and have just been reading here for some months.

I will be on CeBit on monday and try to confirm these news. I will also try to take some pictures an post them here.

Edit: I tried to translate the text from the link to english:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
News from Cowon: At CeBit 2005 the koreans (Cowon) presentate The iAudio X5 and the A2. The X5 is a DAP with lots of memory and capable of displaying videos and photos. The A2 in contrast is a complete PMP.

The iAudio X5 will be released in April 2005 with three diffrent hdds to the market: 20GB, 30GB and 60gb. For the pleasure of the open source community it also will have support for OGG Vorbis and FLAC next to MP3, WMA, ASF and WAV. The sound can be enhanced by lots of "Klangeffekte"(BBE, Mach3Bass, MP Enhance, 5 Band Equalizer, 3D Surround).

The multimedia capebilties sound great, too. The 1,8' TFT color display with a resolution of 160x128 pixel shows JPG pictures and MPEG-4 movies.

The DAP's size is about 10 x 7 x 14 cm (i think this is an error in the artikel and has to be 10 x 7 x 1.4) an weighs 148 gramm including battery. The connection to PC or Mac is USB2.
For contemporaries fond of traveling Cowon offers the X5L version (20GB, 30GB) of the player. They will be about 5 mm thicker and have a Li-Polymer battery capable of running it up to 35 hours.

With color display and big storage size it is predestinated to be used als imagetank. With OTG its possible to transfer pictures from a digital camera to the player with a detour to the pc. This is special even for a player with color display.

In Germany an Austria the Cowon iAudio X5 will be in stores at April 2005. The recommended retail price is supposed to be 349 Euros (20GB), 379 Euros (30GB) and 499 Euros (60GB). The X5L with 20GB or 30GB ar supposed to cost 389 Euros and 419 Euros. The scope of delivery is not published jet. (All prices include VAT which is in Gemany 16%)

Cowon A2

Even more multimedia provides the Cowon A2. At Cebit 2005 in Hannover the korean company release their first PMP. The Cowon A2 is equipped with a 20 GB or a 30 GB hdd and its size is about 78 x 133 x 22 mm.

It supports lots of diffrent music and video codecs. The A2 can play DivX, DiVX DRM, XviD and WMV movies and WMA , WMA DRM 9, AC3 5.1, MP3, OGG, G.726, WAV and ASF audio. It also has an integrated radio.
Furthermore JPEG, GIF and BMP pictures can be displayed. Also the A2 has has OTG.

The looks of the A2 are mainly affected by the 4' Display in 16:9. Movies an pictures can be viewed in a resolution of 480x272 pixel. For movie nights with friends it provides a video out to a tv.
Contrariwise (never heard this word but leo says its ok ;-) ) movies can be recorded from TV, DVD-Player or e.g. video-tape recorder. Recording format ist MPEG-4 with 720 x 480 Pixel and 30 fps.

The Cowon A2 is supposed to be in stores in June 2005 in Germany and Austria. The scope of delivery and price will published by that date.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I apologize for my far from perfect english (its about 4am here in Germany) and all spelling mistakes you can find...

... you can keep them ;-)

Here's a link with some new X5 pics... plus the confirmation of a 60GB model (in addition to 20 and 30).

Now, will it ever support real time lyrics in FLAC? Only time will tell, but that's one thing i'm really hoping for. (And why the hell aren't FLAC lyrics supported, in the M3? How can it be so hard?)

It's been posted here before that the X5 is supposed to be the same width as the M3 in the skinny part and the same width as the M3L at the thich part (4mm thicker) so I'm assuming it's around 14mm at the thin part not including the bulge, which is about what we've been assuming so far.

Personally I don't think the bulge looks bad at all in these recent pictures, to be honest, the M3 is pretty boring the way it is.

In most cases I've seen the euro to dollar conversion for electronics is direct, so a $300 product would be 300 euros. For example, amazon germany sells the M3L for 329 Euros while Amazon US sells it for $339.

In the last picture of those ones from imp3.net, there is a "white" player. Is that an M3 player in silver that is in very bright light or a white version of the x5. i dont see the bump though so it must be an m3 but either way it looks pretty cool.

Thanks OP.

160x128 pixels isn't grea though. My Smartphone and the Iriver 3xx series is higher (220 x 176) but if it's higher FPS it won't really matter.

Maybe they're making an X5L and X5L. Oh man if an X5L came out I'd be soooo happy! I'd be happy to pay £300 up for it. I'm still wondering what colour sound is though? :D

Aewon

X5L is planned. And I think I read 389 Euro for the X5L 20GB and 419 Euro for the 30GB.

So... 300 Euro isnt good enough :P In fact... it's not enough to buy a normal X5 with :(

bradavon
03-14-2005, 12:15
That's only 20€ difference. OMG if those are the prices I'll be as happy as larry.

I think that the release date in the US will be a week or two sooner than in Europe, and the price is about the same i.e. 349$ for the 20GB X5. But I'm not sure at all, so we better all wait 'till Cowon comes up with a real date and price.

Ok I#m back from CeBit (and very exhausted ;) )..
With all those pictures on dapreview I decided not to put my few pictures in this thread. They wouldn't contain anything new...

Just some things I heard from on of the korean cowon representatives:

The X5 and X5L will be out next month...
The X5L will be a little bit thincker than the 20gb version you can see on the pictures...
This is also true for the X5 60gb but not for the X5 30gb..
There will be no remote included...

But... the M3 remote will be compatible with the X5... :)

An some of my impressions using the device:

The Stick is very good and similar to the one used on the G3 or U2...
The Software seemed to have all the features included. Even the Videoplayback worked good enough to e.g. play a music clip. For a full movie the display is just too small.
The display is very bright and good to read even in daylight.
Photos look just great.

But the software was still very slow and some kind of unstable. But thy told me it was a beta firmware (it said version 0.7), and that it would be much better in the final one.

Now I'm in a bit of a trouble... The X5 is just a great device and the joystick is great to use. But at CeBit I discovered another device that would be worth buying ist. Its the Samsung YH-J70. Ist has all the features of the X5 minus Flac but plus music library. Its navigation keys are not as good as the joystick of the X5 but the YH-J70 ist a little bit smaller and thinner, i think, and has a great playbacktime of 25 Hrs. Well I think I got a moth to decide ;) ...

Thanks for the heads up Aachenmade.

I take it the release date of next month is Korea?

If the M3L is anything to go by the X5L will blow the 25 hour playback out of the water. The M3L is 36 hours.

I'm annoyed no remote is coming with it! Did they say one will be available as an extra cost? As I could live with this. I'd definitely need one.

As for video playback you'll be surprised how quick you get used to the small size. Once you get into a film you soon forget the size issues or the very least a TV show. I don't watch to many films on my SmartPhone (with a similar size screen) but watching TV shows is great.

I'm so chuffed an X5L is coming. I can have my cake and eat it. I want lots of battery power most of all (M5L) but a colour screen etc . . . is just awesome.

p.s - Aachenmade does the Samsung you saw really have everything the X5 does? Such as video playback, direct encoding, file/folder structure . . .

bradavon
03-14-2005, 16:54
I've found something on that Samsung player and it looks no where near as nice looking:

http://www.dapreview.net/news.php?item.886

Neither of these links mention direct encoding and/or file/folder access.

Things to remember about Samsungs:

-They have partnered with Napster and Microsoft, thus rely on Nap and MS software, thus no drag and drop
-They say they have alot of features, but those features aren't completely fleshed out or are half done.
-Navigation is not that great
-Sound leans to the bass side of things, and they usually have weak outputs (7mW)
-direct encoding is possible, but is limited

No, the X5 will be around $150+ lower than the A2. Also the A2 probably will not appear until Summer.

Even though I think the A2 looks really nice and of good spec, I think it is too big to use for a portable music player, on the other hand the X5 is not much bigger than an M3 and looks and feels great a s music player.

Hi Bradavon

The remotes will be optional extra's, the current model used for the M3 work fine with the X5. But it is just the exisiting screen so you will not get video and image playback on the remote. It will just show the file information. However all the menu functions work fine.

I don't own an M3 so would have to buy a new remote. It's a cheek one doesn't come with the M5/X5 but there you go. I'd be surprised if the official M5/X5 remote will be able to display image/video on the remote. Wouldn't it be to small anyway?

How limited?

Not that it matters really with no drag and drop.

bradavon:

It is the release date in europe, maybe in korea also.
Surely the X5L will have 35 hours of playbacktime, but it will be far thicker and more expensive tha the YH-J70.

The man from cowon did not really know wheter there will be a remote to buy as an extra, because he said that will be a choice of the shops. So I think there will be one. The remote as replacement for the M3 costs about 50 Euros he said.

As for the Samsung Player... my first impression were just a good one. I didn't have the time to test it with all its funktions but from what I have experienced at CeBit I can say, that it may be as good as the X5 and so its good to have just another option to choose from.

i just been thinking while looking at my m3 40gb and looking at the pictures of the x5. i cant rememeber if this has been talked about or not.

it seems as though the bottom is defo the same thickness as the m3 20gb, and the top looks like the same thickness as my 40gb which would mean 14mm at the bottom and 18mm on the top.

now if it its true that the 60gb will be around 5mm thicker than the 20 and 30gb...it means that the bottom of the x5 will be 19mm and the top will be 23mm. if true than that would mean 1mm thicker than the h300 series. however we are talking about 60gb here....and dont ask, i have a thing for thickness as my 40gb can already be seen in my jeans pockets even though i use a ipod sock as a case.

cant imagine having anything thicker than the 18mm thickness of it......ah well, aewon were all relying on you and others who get your hands on this beast.......

This is actually why I asked if anyone had seen the X5L. What if for the 60gb and L versions the filled in the area underneathe the bulge? Could this not be a possibility. It would be a heck of alot better than having such a brick of a player.

Also, most of those sites that claim that it is 14mm thick obviously are excluding the bulge, thus if you add the bulge it is 5mm thicker. If they made it a flat top by filling in the area underneat the bulge this would be mean that it is uniformally 5mm thicker, thus the site claims that the the 60gb and L versions are 5mm thicker.

Anyone have any clue about the US? I am going to go straight for the 60gb version I think I can forgive the size because of the HDD space and the feature set. Does anyone know if the X5 has support for browsing by artist, album, and genre? Hell I don't even need that feature since I will have actual playlists but still it would be nice to have. It's looking like its going to totally crush the Iriver from what I have read about the past players and the screens I have seen of this new player. Damn I need to sell my Iriver bad! :D

it probably wont be comming with id3 browsing support. im not sure if it will be implemented, but somehow i very much doubt it.

as for wanting the 60gb, if you really need all that space, cant really think why. but if you want to play movies im sure the a2 would be much better, however no 60gb version is in the line yet but i rekon they might just make one.

the 60gb x5 size seems to be abit too scarey.

its also a shame that no 40gb will be made. it woud have been so wikid seeing a single platter 40gb toshiba slimline harddrive in the standard x5 case. ahh well, just gna have to wait for someone to start using these.

i think i read somewhere that apple will be using the new lineup of toshiba drives for their next gen ipods grrr.

x5 shall still kick ass

I guess I'll have a bit of a wait for the M5L then, I really don't need color, but I really want to know if the M5L will be bigger too, 22mm in the bulge and no color screen seems like much.

It is a crucial time for Cowon. Apple and Sony already have HD players with 25 hours battery life + under 15mm thick and id3 browsing. The new more efficient drives will soon be in Rio, Creative and Others. If the M5L is 20mm thick and 30+ grams heavier it may turn people off. Also if the charge time is 6 hours vs. 3 or less for others.

Cowon is a younger, smaller company and the Toshiba's, Hitachi's, etc. can sell more units to the big manufacturers and cater to them first. If you think about how hard it really is, Cowon is doing quite an impressive job. And with the drop in the flash player prices let's hope they stay healthy enough to keep up with quality and feature packed units in the future.

Wait... Apple has a HD player with 25 hours battery life? which one is this? I thought their Mini was 18 hours.

And which one is the Sony?

Cowon's products have more features though.

Mine definately doesn't get 25hrs. I get like 14-16, and I hate the software. Its small though but thats about all.

Software, ugh. I would never buy a mp3 player that requires software.

Unfortunately no. The only reason I have this sony one is because I impulse bid on Ebay, thinking that I most definately would not win. Alas I did win.

Its actually not THAT bad, but it has its quirks. It is better than the Samsung Yp-910 I had before it. It is very small and very light. Fairly easy to use. The main thing I am dissappointed about is the sound quality.

Once the the X5/M5 is released I will sell it and get that.

impulse bid? so you just did it for fun? if so das kinda funny.

how much you pick it up for btw?

did you have any problems with mp3 conversion or transferring?

Krishna
03-17-2005, 10:18
I won it for 270US, which is actually very good. There was no conversion of my files, as its the Nw-hd3, which supports MP3 natively. I didn't even really have to use Sonic Stage, because there is a drag and drop program you can use.

Only thing is though playlists have to be made in Sonic Stage. You can import M3u files and they do show up as playlists, BUT when you transfer over a playlist it transfers the songs again. This is another big problem for me. Otherwise its not bad.

How do you mean a screen looks like a camera???

Aewon
03-18-2005, 12:42
no no... the X5 screen looks very cheap and pixelated UNDER a camera. as in when viewing a camera-video, it looks weird.

Yep. It's near the bottom of the main page entitled "CeBIT 2005: Bunch-o-cheap-o movies". You need to be a registered member first before you can see the video links though.

That direct link works for me for me btw.

Well I need the extra space because I normally use my mp3 players as portable drives for shuttling files between my Gentoo partition and my windows partition on my desktop then my laptop of course. Besides I figure that I already experienced 40gb's with my Iriver I mine as well advance another 20gb's with my next one. I hope posting a notice in my school lounge will help me get rid of this Iriver I certaintly could use the 275usd to help cushion the blow of buying the X5. Oh man I can't wait to riddle X5 owners with questions before I buy mine. :)

Today I went to Fnac which is the equivalent of Best Buy in Switzerland and France, and I asked them when will they get the X5. They told me next week or by the end of the month.

So, yes the X5 is coming out really really soon.

Um, another question...

Will those datas be saved to the player so that it just will be on "stand-by" when u turn it off to save datas like time or to start-up faster?
This is with the iPod n i think that would suck because ur batterie will be gone when u dont use ur player for 3 days! For example the iRiver H3x0 doesnt have a battery drain BUT the startup takes normally about 20sec...

bradavon
03-21-2005, 16:05
This is an issue with IPAQs too which makes no sense to me because if you turn them on properly from completely off it takes all of 5 seconds.

It's really not worth the battery drain I agree.

Did they give any indication about the price shaka?

The page on the Italian iAudio site looks to suggest 349 Euros but my Italian is non-existent so I could be totally wrong!

Nope, the guy didn't know the price but it should be around the same price as I posted on the first post.
