Thanks for the review. I'm not sure if I'm going to upgrade my headphones cos I'm pretty happy with the ones that shipped (I'm not a big audiophile just yet, though I plan to be later).

I was actually surprsied that these earphones that shipping with the M3 are comfortable. Are the Sony ones the same size and shape? I might consider them if I know they're as comfortable as these. I usually get annoyed with earbuds, and you can't really test them in store...

My best mate just bought Shure E2C's and they are a lot better than my Sony EX-71's. All the above shown ear-phones are typical asian earphones which are very hard to get in Europe (The Netherlands). I think we can compare the Shure (sound-wise) with the EX-888, but they are in-ear so much more comfortable and no other sound than your music, nice!

I use Shure E2C's also. they are AMAZING. the sound is plugged directly to your brain

How is the durability of the e2cs? I would hate to buy a pair of $100 plugs that I am likely to easily break :(

Need Help. I plan on buying a U2 and need a good pair of headphones that can withstand an intense 1 hr cardio workout at the gym every day. I have tried the koss porta pros, great sound but some slippage. I don't mind earbuds but need something that will stay in the ear. I don't mind spending up to 100.00 Any advice? Thank's.

nyjets011269,

My wife has a pair of Koss KSC 50 earphones that she uses at the gym everyday. They are ear the clip-on type, she finds them to be very comfortable. They are around $20 so you don' have to worry about messing them up.

The durability seems to be very good, but I can't really comment on that since he only owns them for two weeks now. The first look is very promising, the cables have a 2 times thicker rubber-coating compared to my EX-71's. The cable is also very well connected to the monitor, en looks very durable.

I think that in-ear buds are excellent for training purposes, since they tend to stay in plays under any circumstances. You might have to go to your personal hi-fi dealer first, to check several ear-buds en headphones. You might consider ordering them on th einternet after all, a lot cheaper!

yua, the Shure E2C's DEFINATELY use thicker gauge wiring throughout. better for sound. better for durability. I have only owned mine for 5 months now so I cant comment on long term durability. the earbuds are actually quite thicker than other earbuds due to design. although the earbud is an "in-ear" design with the end of the buds going way into your ear, the actualy drivers/main body actually reside outside the ear in a big acorn-shaped enclosure. they seem pretty beefy.

HOWEVER, i dont think i could exercise in them or anything. i'd just use the standard generic earbuds cowon included. but thats just me. it would be like running in prada dress shoes or sipping champagne in a bar!

You definitely won't want to excercise in those EC2's. Due to the way in which they seal off your ear canal with a silicone...cone, any rubbing on the cord will be amplified and transmitted to your ears, which gets very annoying unless you're sitting still. Which is why I bought the B&O A8 instead. I can mike on roads and in mountains all I want without them budging at all, and you don't hear any rubbing sounds coming from the cord.

I got my Sharp HP-MD33 today. And, although they still may need to be burned in, the sound already better than the Sony EX71 :)

Ashlee have you tried the Audio Technica Ath-Ec7 (similiar style to the A8's). If so can you give any impressions on those.

Thanks

My opinion is that better earphones are a must for a high-end player like the Iaudio M3. Otherwise you could've bought a ZEN Xtra instead, because sound-quality isn't the most important thing to you. A big waste of money if you use the M3 without high quality earphones.

Krishna

Ummmm... The Zen series has made a name for itself among Audiophiles as the best sounding DAP. It has a 98db sn ratio compared to the M3's 95.
The M3 sounds good yes, but the Zen Xtra will sound better with the same headphones. The only problem with the Zen is that is a monster. The only Dap that I believe beats the Zen in sound quality is the Rio Karma. The differences are so minimal though at the end of the day it doesn't matter.

Dunno what this is all about. I've got some old Sony earphones and these are enough...
I don't hear any differece with the Sennheiser MX300 from my friend.

Well, I've never heard a Zen to be honoust, but it was just an example from my side. But Cedric is right, if you don't hear the difference, why bother. I just can't cope with the fact that I need $100+ earphones to get the sound I want ;)

Well, if you had compared it to the Iriver Ihp-120 I wouldn't have said anything. If you compared it to the Ipod I would have agreed with you.

Anyways to get back on topic, has anyone have Ksc-35's. Could you post some impressions.

I just got a set of shure e2c in the uk for £51. Coupled with my M3 they are awesome earphones. Using the sleeves as oppose to the foam plugs. I found them easy to fit and dont so far suffer any discomfort wearing them for a period of time. This appears to be a common complaint on other sites.

Was using sony ex71's with my old iriver but they are not a patch on the shure's.

E2C are actually very good for working out, at least for me. i like drowning out noise so i can concentrate on lifting / hear my feet pound. if you have music playing (i like louder metal when i'm working out) you won't be able to hear the cord noise. that stuff is only apparent when there is no music playing.

i used to think the e2c was durable, and i guess i still do. however, i took them with me on a 45 day trip and they were constantly thrown in and out of my pocket / backpack. now there is a cable issue, where one driver won't fire unless the cable is held in an exact manner. i rigged the clip on my MD remote to do this, but it doesn't change the fact that the can is broken. I currently have 71's on order because i assume they will be more durable than the E2cs / if they break i really won't care all that much :)

I never really liked the E2c. The emphasis is on the low end to the extent that the bass really over powers the mids and highs. This is ofcourse just my opinion and didn't really get to listen to them for long (about 1hr).

For canalphones I would choose the Ety Er-6i's or Er-4

I have had shure E2c for a while but I didn't like them that much. The fit wasn't that good and the soudn quality was ... well just not good enough!
Then I bought the E3's and fell in love with them almost instantaniously! Since then I've heard westone UM2's and the Ety ER-4, but for some bizarre reason I still prefer the E3's; listening to ER-4's for hours can be tiresome (well in my case), but fallling asleep with the E3's is no problem :)

I was used to waking with a dead DAP but that never happend to me since I use the M3L :D

Krishna
10-26-2004, 18:57
Hey arielext, you've tried Um2's?

Can you possibly do a slight comparo between your E3c's and Um2's(pretty much give fairly detailed thoughts on both). I really want to get the Um2's but have to wait until I find out how much the M5 will cost, so I can stay under my audio budget. My next choice would be E3c's if the M5 costs more than $400.

Shure pretty much stole Etymotic's technology from what I heard. For fideliy, I'd go with Etys, but Shure has done a number of things on the ergonomics side, even if they do lose out some on the reproduction quality. At least, from what I hear.

I've borrowed the UM2's from a friend some time ago and gave them back with mixed feelings, are they worth upgrading from the excelent E3's? The answer after all is yes they are. The E3's really lack bass. I've listened to the UM2's again 2 or 3 weeks ago and decided to order a pair myself. Mine have the comply canal tips which are very very nice! They offer a great seal without much hassle. I've also noticed that the UM2 tend to have a bit more detail in the whole spectrum but they are a bit harsh in the high ends. To sum it all up:
If you want good cans for a portable setup go for the E3's; they sound great and are very pleasant to listen to (and you save some hard earned money). The UM2's are better period The bass on the um2 is a bit overwheling if you are used to the E3 bass (like I was) but after a while you hear that you have missed out on some details in the music! The comply tips are truly excelent, the fit the E3's as well; I'll give them a try and let you know what I think. Now to find a new home for a decent pair of E3's (non ipodish white of course)

Eggos tend to be good in any league, I like the sound and the comfort they give. I guess I would've bought the 33's, they have just that extra that I need for $40/60 extra. Not a bad choice though! :D

yeah.. after reading in the mysticriver forums, i kind of feel left out of the 66 crowd...

the iriver ppl r crazy about these head phones...

oh well... i don't think my ears r sensitive enough to hear the differences anyway...

if i ever need another set, i'll make shur to get the 66's...

i have the shure e5c's and yes, i know they are $500 (US) but in my oppinion, worth every penny. They fit well and sound superb. I'm a dj so i use them both with my sets and my m3. If your looking for HI Fidelity. the shure line is a great way to go. I'd suggest the e3c's for the m3 (nice how the 3's fit in ahha)

Yet another Shure E2c holder - I love 'em. Crisp, clear, sound, but soft and not lacking on the bass. I wouldn't use them for running outside, but probably for working out. The reason why I would not use them when running is because it could be a safety hazard. You honestly can't hear anything besides the beautiful music flowing into your ears - which would be bad if there's a car that's going to hit you.

I strongly suggest Westone UM2. I had the top of the line etymotic for years and enjoyed it until I got the UM2. They are far better especially in the bass. From some of the reviews I have read, they are suppose to be superior to the 500 dollars Shure, but I myself have not compared them.

I do like Etymotic in one department and that is a small wax blocker that does not allow water such as sweat during workout to go into hte headphone. When the blocker gets clogged, you can change it. Such is not the ase with UM2 and neither with Shure I bellieve. Of course, I am talking about serious sweating in the gym from serious running for a long period.

I like the UM2, and it sounds extremely similar to the E5. Difference lies in that the bass, where the E5 is just ever so slightly tighter out of an average portable source using similar encoded bitrates and file types. (you gottalistent extensively, I thoguht I heard no diff from the start)

However, despite what both these phones have for them, I found them to be a bit too bass biased, so I went with the E4G instead, where its more balanced :)

Use soft silicon ear tips.
