View Full Version : A2 or X5? The time has come, I must decide.

I will be using the player almost exclusively for music, but video is nice too. I know the A2 is primarily a video player, but I've heard the sound quality and menu navigation is better than the X5. I use mostly FLAC and OGG, so I know the X5 wins as far as capacity goes. However, that's not really the issue. I just want the best quality, most flexible and easy to navigate player that I can find. Help!

Thanks.

In my opinion go for A2 if the size is not a problem. If yes then go for the X5. Btw, there are also rumours about an X7 coming soon...

Dude or Dudet,

I own both and if you are using it primarily for music, get the X5. The A2 can only support ONE playlist, and that is the OTG playlist.

The video is great on the A2, but in my honest opinion, it should be only used as a video player. Plus, while small for a PMP, it is large for an MP3 player.

Go for a 60 gig X5L.

Longer battery life with the X5L too.

A2 has better sound than X5? I've never heard /anyone/ say that.

I got both A2 and X5(v)
I think the X5 is a very nice player but you must have the L version to enjoy more.
The sound quality is a little little bit better on X5 (what i think)
But the A2 is a very nice player, but a little bit to big for music use.
The screen on A2 is wonderful, i havent seen any beter PMP.

Why must you have the L version to enjoy more?

That's what I thought. The way you phrased it made it sound like there was something more to it than battery life.

Speaking of which, what would a real battery time be on a X5 as opposed to an X5L? And does playing FLAC make a difference? With rockbox?

I'm sick of waiting for something "new" over the horizon and I'm gonna' order SOMETHING over the weekend and I think it's gonna' be an X5 60GB. I won't be too far away from a way to charge it - usage will be home, office, car so battery doesn't seem to be an issue to me.

Knowing that SQ is my main concern, followed by capacity, then feature set, is there a better option than the X5? Stating loosely that "money is no object", is there a better route?

The X5 is getting pretty dated now. Cowon really needs to come out with a new HDD AUDIO player, instead of making all these new things with big screens and low battery life. Try looking at other players not by cowon. (I don't have any recommendations, but you could check out dapreview). I bet you could find something cheaper with similar features, bigger screen, and smaller size.

I got the x5L over a year ago and regret not buying the x5 instead. I rarely let the battery go below half way before charging it again. I wish I would have gone for the x5 because of the smaller physical size (not that the x5l is huge or anything). One advantage, though, is that if I don't buy a new DAP in the next few years, the slowly degrading battery life won't be a real problem.

and what's up with the prices at amazon? The x5l is cheaper:

Sticking to the spirit of this thread, I agree with the above. And believe me, I'm looking elsewhere. Despite this the X5 still looks good: SQ, capacity, Rockbox, etc. The weekend is still young. We'll see if I end up with an iAudio player or not.[confused]
