I have a cowon A2 and a creative zen xtra. I have been trying to use the usb host function between the 2 and can't. Sometimes the cowon will recognize the zen xtra (the name will pop up) but it won't do anything. Other times it just says usb host connection failed. I can tell it's trying to do something because if I try the connection w/ the xtra off-it will turn it on.
What am I missing?
thanks![confused]

The Cowon A2 USB-OTG function only recognizes UMS (universal media storage) devices - such as almost
all external hard disks, card readers, many MP3 players (including itself) and some digital cameras.
There is a stickied list here- http://iaudiophile.net/forums/showthread.php?t=4998
I am not sure but I don't think that the Creative Zen is UMS (quick test: when you connect it to your computer,
does it show up as a new drive? If it doesn't then it's not UMS).
If it's not UMS, then - in the current state of things - it won't be recognized properly by the A2. Sorry...

Thanks for the reply
I had read that forum and since I have a Zen XTRA I thought it would work. Apparently not. My XTRA is recognized a an external drive by my computer...
Again, sometimes the A2 will start to recognize it (the name Zen XTRA pops up on the screen while establishing connection but just never finishes) and (most of the times) it won't.
I guess I'm done.
Thanks again.

Sounds like a really weird case. I don't know the XTRA but if it's indeed recognized as an external drive by your computer, it really SHOULD work with the A2!
I'm afraid I don't have a solution for you, but maybe a few ideas:
- does the XTRA synch without any problems at all with your PC? (have you tried to move files across both ways directly in Windows Explorer?)
If it doesn't work without using a supplied synching software, then you can forget it, it's not UMS.
- does a different UMS device synch correctly with the A2? (for example a card reader or a USB stick)
- don't know if the XTRA offers bidirectional USB-OTG, but have you tried SENDING files from the XTRA instead of having the A2 FETCHING them?
To do this, you would connect the XTRA's USB-OTG port to the USB (not USB-OTG!) port of the A2 and tell the XTRA to SEND files (eg the XTRA,
not the A2 is the "active" device).

1. I guess the xtra is NOT a UMS since it is not recognized as a new drive by the computer. So for all I can tell the XTRA is NOT compatible with the A2
2. my nikon coolpix 2500 and sony clie are recognized by the computers as new drives (UMS devices) and while the A2 will recognize their names, it won't read info off of them-connection fails
3. I have a thumb drive and a lexar MS reader that the A2 has no problem reading.
I guess I have an excuse to buy a new camera and pda.
Thanks for your help. I hope this helps others.[yes]
