This is the Cowon perfect machine, it's a great multimedia player with new features that make it perfect, i hope they didn't forget the play list better yet, included m3u.
DAP and GPS wow!!!
Sometimes i wish i was korean [rolleyes]
MESSAGE TO COWON:
1. Give it 4 gigs mem at least.
2. Make 8 GIG SD cards useable in the slot.
With those two requests, the former of which has almost become an expection in North Americas market, and the latter extending the useablity of this player, you could asuure yourself a successful player. 8 GIG cards will be under $100 within two years, thereby keeping this player a semi-feasable option, even when 16 and 32 GIG flash players are available within those same two years.
Everything is great on this player, battery life; codec support; headphone output; touch screen.
Don't get buried, like the iriver U10, because of a lack of memory.
Throw in a hd... 30+ gigs and I am sold....

I have to agree!
Great gadget![yes]
Sd slot is a cool idea! I think this thing looks moreover really outstanding as well[rolleyes]
Keep it real Cowon [wink]
So excited....
I'm looking everyday to see when this is out!!!
8GB+ SD would be amazing, giving the player the ability to pretty much last on the market for years.
Does anyone know if SDHC is hard to incorporate? What devices can use SDHC now (besides cameras)?
loving the look of this machine.. can't wait to get my hands on one to try out the touchscreen! looks like cowon has got it right with this one - great battery life, great format support, expandability.. i'm hoping that a 4gb unit will be available, but i'm pretty sure it should be as they've made all of their other models available in 4gb now.
Give that device a HD! (1,8" 40GB)

I concur. SDHC compatibility and 4 gigs base memory are a must. I'm probably one of the most enthusiastic about this player, but I have to admit, memory problems could turn me off.

Hello All
What a great product again from Cowon.
I have a 30GB A2 and a Mobiblu Cube 2GB, but guess what, in between, I've got a place for the D2.
There are a couple of features that are a must to me, and that I hope won't be forgotten:
DivX and XviD compatibility, no need to reincode as on most player except PMPs and Zen Vision M:
.srt subtitles compatibility
4GB memory at least or 8GB SD compatibility at least, because I think video players are pointless at 2GB.
If everything is OK on those points, I will get it, it's so cool.
I am so into Cowon, they have excellent built quality, sound awesome, work without a soft on your PC. This is what I call user friendly.
Just one more question: when????? I want it now! :-)
Stephane
I wouldnt get your hopes up for divx support (i cant think of one flash player that has this feature), however i agree that divx should be standard on any player which claims to support video playback.
I am trying to justify buying one of these but i dont think there is a place for it as i already have a A2 and U3.

Hello
Well, I know that so far basically only the PMPs a la Archos, A2 and co can read the divx and xvid straight without any conversion, but I am confident Cowon will go beyond this. I guess it's more to do with the chip than with the fact that the player is Flash or HDD based.
Too many players claim to play video when they are only playing converted files, with a reduced refresh rate, etc. This has to stop, and I trust cowon for that :-) Conversion is a pain, the only advantage it has is that it reduces the file's size, which isn't bad when every MB counts
I just read on dapreview that capacity will go up tu 4GB
Please make it compatible with Xvid, DivX, .srt and big capacity SD Cards, and I want one.

It looks darn freaky. I cant tell if its fake. though it seems unlikely that they would do an 8gb flash device with sd slot.
Forgive a dumb question, but will the insertion of a 4gb SB card effectively make a D2 with a 2gb capacity have a 6gb capacity? Will all the data, whether in its internal flash memory or on the card be equally as accessible?
Also does anyone know about other features, like fm recording (and in what format/bitrate), etc.

even if it looks fake it looks good except for the standard old school cowon interface, I never really liked it

Yeah the D2 would have a total of 6GB if a 2GB card is used with a 4GB D2 unit. I think (like most other expandable players) the card will be accessed separately . For instance if you have any music on the SD card you would select the card from the menu and play the song. I don't think it will be copied over to the main flash

My Iaudio X5 battery died and wont hold a charge for more that 1hr. I can get a new battery or.....or get a new device. here are the things that I MUST have:
2.2 inch > bright screen to watch movies
Good codec support (ogg, mpg4, maybe divx)
FM reciever with good reception
FM recording
Voice recording
Photo viewer
id3 tag info
decent battery life
8gb flash (Dont need more than a few hors of music or video at a time.)
USB to Go
Is not the size of a brick
NOT an IPOD
And...................scratch proof.
So guys and gals what do you think? Woould this be the ultimate device or what?
(yeah ..yeah..I know you need a gizillion gb of storage so you could sit there steering at the small screen for 16hr straight watching the
Matrix or something)
Does such a device exist? I will tell you Creative does not have it, iRiver does not have it, iPod.....definitively dose not have it, Toshiba..nope, Archos.....oh I wish the 505 could, but Cowon.....the D2 would be perfect if it came in 8gb version.

Wow, I've never heard of the Meizu M6. I did a little research and it seems to be well regarded over at dapreview. I will look into this more, thanks for the tip.
One troubling thing: (just based on a little quick research so this opinion may well change), I get a "copycat" hit off them, at worst maybe even "ripoff artist". The design/gui seems to blatantly copy the ipod nano, and in the archives on this forum, exity discusses meizu's copying of an earlier iaudio product(in look) and recommends to steer clear of this company (this was in 2004). I understand that everyone learns and even copies from everyone else, but I prefer to reward those companies that step out and at least try to be original and follow their own vision. I think iaudio is such a company.
I still will look into the M6. I do like its slimness, codec support, and purported video quality.

Yup that is what they are doing. That is why i like Cowon, they push the envelope of originality. They mp3 players is always radically different from from the leading players. But it's the holidays and need a cool gift for my wife. I work with a korean girl who has asked her sister to buy the D2 for me and then ship it to her in NY. If she does i'll post pics and a review.

Hello iaudiophiles. I was probably one of the first americans to purchase an x5 of the cowon america online store and I had enjoyed the device very much, but the battery life started to kill me so I took a chance on the meizu because I heard that even cnet (hard to please) thought it had great sound quality. Wow did my chance pay off! I own a pair of Westone UM2s and the Meizu drives them with more authority than I ever thought possible out of IEMs. The bass on this little device is INSANE! By insane I don't mean boomy and annoying but very deep and controlled. Its sad, but I can't really listen to the x5 anymore because the meizu sounds so much better. Sad part is that the meizu i have is 2gb and I really want another 30gb player :( But, if you are considereing the m6 and you have decent headphones, definitely don't hesistate to buy! Battery life is great, yes of course it looks like an iPOD, but who do you think makes the iPODs? I got over the copy-cat thing REAL fast once I realized how much @$$ the SQ on this think kicks. Though I am a lover of cowon, this thing has the x5 beat pretty bad in SQ, every genre I've tried (Miles Davis, Crystal Method, Slayer, Jack Johnson) have sounded INCREDIBLE. Better even than my x5 sounded paired with a portable headphone amp. The sound really has to be heard to be believed. If only meizu had a larger capacity player :( I'm hoping some other people can get their hands on this thing and say whether or not it sounds like the x5, this way I'll know whether or not I should buy. The D2 does look quite amazing in many respects though (especially battery life)
Hi all guys..i m really interested in this player because it seems so great but i have a doubt...do you think it will be impossibile (or too hard) to use Cowon D2 while it is in a pocket?...i mean only up-down volume and skip or fast forward songs..volume shouldnt be a probleam thanks to the 2 buttons but skip and fast forward?..i dont have any ideas about that...

M6 or D2 is going to be a FAQ I suspect. Especially as the M6 will be available in the UK next week whereas who knows when we shall see a D2 over here.

I would think it would be very hard to use blind as it is touchscreen so there is nothing to guide your fingers to the right button, if you know what i mean. I would imagine it would take some practice to learn exactly where to press on the screen.

The best alternative would be a remote. It is designed to be small yet functional and stylish. What would work best is an arm band perhaps for non visual use. But i suspect that too would be difficult. so ...here's to creating the right playlists so you don't have to do much input for a long time between yanking this out of your pants to to touch it or play with it. (pants pocket that is)
mm you are right men...
but i hope that at Cowon are so good that they implement (or maybe the already have done this) something like:
Press MENU plus + (volume up) = fast forward/skip
Press MENU plus - (volume down) = rewind/skip
i think it's not a bad idea..in my opionion it would be so great because you could easily use the D2 while in pocket (and maybe with hold on)...
zaphanathpaneah
12-12-2006, 15:36
Are there any buttons on the side? That would be the only way. I hope it has a screen lock so you don't accidentally change tracks or modes. One thing i like about this thing is that it was meant to display. I can see it on an armband at the gym or going for an afternoon jog. This is no ipod...it's better so lets not hide it.
yeah it has a few buttons on the side..one for HOLD (or screen lock as you call it ^_^) & power on the player...
and other 3: MENU, +, - (for up/down volume or use them as joystick when in menu)...
but it would be good to use this also to skip song..like that the pocket use would become also easier than much other players i think...
and with those feature (without any comprimises to use it in pocket), battery, display, quality, etc etc, it would surely be the best flash player in my opinion...
I will have to agree with zaphanathpaneah here and say that the easiest way to contol this blind would be if there was a remote for it. It would have to be very small with only basic functions or it would sort of defeat the point of the player.

I was just thinking this on my way home from class today. I do hope Cowon does have something like this, and if they don't, they should implement it in a firmware.
yes..i hope that if they dont make any small and easy to use remote controller they implement that function in a firmware update because it would be very useful and i dont think it would be so difficult for them to implement it (if they havent already done this ^_^)...
i also hope they will import quickly it to europe...they said me in jenuary will be in netherland at the price of 269-279€ (for the 4gb version) they think..
not bad but i would have prefered to make me a gift on Christmas [rolleyes]

Guys....this was on my Christmas list but all hopes are dashed...but still hoping to get it by next summer. Getting electronics into the USA is hard, not sure about Europe. Regulations here are stiff and if it does not pass a sleugh of test for radio interference, health risk, environmental risk, and who knows what else .....it does not get approved. However there was a company in California that imported such hard to fine items.....maybe i'll go through them.

Actually, yes, I think that would be pretty much the D2! According to the specs, the D2 will have a bigger screen than the one you want, so that's a plus.
It will support the DivX codec. The official spec says MPEG-4, but c'mon people, why on earth wouldn't it be supported without conversion? I doubt they would start with this device. According to the official site it appears even more codecs will supported than previous devices, such as APE.
It will have ID3 Tag info browsing (as seen in the YouTube preview video), as well as the good old filename browsing capability you people have gotten comfy with the A2 and X5 (or not? [smile]).
Decent battery life? I think aproximately 52 hours and 10 hours for audio listening and video viweing respectively would suffice.
In regard to the 8GB flashcard. I wouldn't worry about. As they come more and more commonly available, there is no doubt that Cowon will provide an update to take advantage of higher capacity cards. After all, they are good at this.
I actually want to get this player and skip over the A2 because it will be small enough to fit in my pocket nicely, and be able to display clear video and at 30FPS (which the X5 couldn't do especally when watching stuff with subtitles). I think the smallness factor would fit your requirements here.
I'm pretty sure this will not be an iPod! [toungue]
Regarding the other features you mentioned; I can't see them not appearing on this unit as they have been available on previous devices.
I guess some of these things came from my observation of the preview video (I think the guy was using a pre-production model), so if Cowon doesn't change those specs, then the above should be correct.
zaphanathpaneah
12-13-2006, 06:26
Thanks...you are correct. There is another player the Meizo 6 that...might also work but Cowon's player is nicer. I will have to wait until next year I think. on Cowons website you can order it for international shipping but you will have to pay a tarrif and you must be a legal citizen of Korea. Oh well...here is the offical waiting thread.

I really hope you are true with all those features. Especially about Divx support. Let's hope and pray.
Got a D2 and must say its a fantastic little player. The screen quality really is amazing and the touch screen very easy to use. I haven't really tested yet for pure audio but will be travelling next week so will get a chance then to test every aspect.
Let me know if there are any specific questions or if any of you would like to see pictures of the unit.
Work in a related area so a sample was sent to me for testing. Its a pre-production unit so some features are missing but there was a firmware upgrade sent today that I need to run still.

I asked Kevin this question, but he didn't quite understand me. My main curiousity is how well video with subtitles fare on the unit. You say it has a fantastic screen, so that sounds good. Would you mind at some point testing out a video that displays subtitles to get an idea how viewable they on a screen this size? Thanks.
Oh well this is a question most people have, does it support sdhc? Also, any pictures you feel like taking would be amazing.

First of all thank you for answering these questions.
-Do you know if they have got a video cable with it?
-Can you let the player start playing music directly when you start it (without doing any other action)?
-A battery test would be nice (doesnt even have to be very accurate. Just tell me if you can get 40 hours out of it)?
-Is there any way of using the top buttons for next song (by pressing more buttons at once for example)?
-Can you drag files from your sd card to the internal questions?
Any picture would be nice, but thats only an extra.
I know I'm asking a lot of questions so just start at the top and stop when you're bored :P.

I don't have any ripped videos with subtitles to test this but will try get something to test this for you.

Dont know to be honest, I dont have any sdhc cards to test on it. No mention in the user manual either, just says supports sd/mmc.
I'll take some pics tomorrow and stick them up.
First of all thank you for answering these questions.
-Do you know if they have got a video cable with it?
The sample I got came in bubble wrap with just the charger and headphones but the manual was sent by email as a pdf and that states that the video cable is not included
-Can you let the player start playing music directly when you start it (without doing any other action)?
No, tried this by switching off the unit during playback and then switching back on, it just went back to the same file but paused
-A battery test would be nice (doesnt even have to be very accurate. Just tell me if you can get 40 hours out of it)?
Have not had an opportunity as yet to test full battery potential, going to CES on Monday and have a 20 hour journey so will get a good test run then [thumbsup]
-Is there any way of using the top buttons for next song (by pressing more buttons at once for example)?

No, not that I could see anyway. I do have new firmware though that needs to be installed, doing this tomorrow so will let you know if there are any major changes in the UI etc.
Any picture would be nice, but thats only an extra.
No problem, will take a good few tomorrow and put them up

Just to clarify, say you are playing an MP3 file, and turn off the player, when you turn it back on will it be paused at the point in which you left from?
Thanks in advance about trying out subtitles.

No, cant see any option to do that anyway.

Yes, but when you switch it off and then back on it returns to the main menu, when you select music it is paused where you left off.

Yes, but when you switch it off and then back on it returns to the main menu, when you select music it is paused where you left off.
Thanks for the response. I just thought of something extra. Just say I listen to a song for a bit, then maybe pause it, then switch to a video and also watch that for a while, then pause that, and then turn off the player. Will that mean when I turn the unit on again, either song or video will be paused at where I left it when going back into either the music or video mode?
This would be ideal as I may be on a bus or train for a while, and want to play some videos, but when I get off and have to start walking, I may want to pick up from where I left off when last playing a tune.
One more. I was wondering how the unit's internal playlist function works (i.e. not through the creation of a file you import). Just say I have an album in a folder, can I easily add the whole contents of the folder to the playlist in one go? How flexible is the unit's playlist? Can you easily delete, move up and down entries, and so forth? Cheers.
Heh, sorry for the convoluted questions.

I live in Korea and I bought a D2 two days ago. So far I’ve been impressed.
I paid 200,000 Korean won for the 2G model (without DMB features). The 4G model isn't available yet.
Sound and video quality is fantastic. It's light, looks awesome and feels sturdy.
Just to answer a few queries I've read here:
- you CAN customize the 'm' or menu button (it lies between the - and + volume buttons). There are 3 options: to skip to the next track, skip to the previous track, or to play/pause. This is done by pushing and holding the 'm' button. It's an option in the settings and makes a huge difference to those of us who like to fiddle around with our hands in our pockets…
- you can set it up so that it resumes both audio and video files. They'll resume from the last point you paused them or turned the player off, regardless of how many times you switch between audio and video. Text files cannot be resumed in the same way but text and video files can hold 'bookmarks', enabling you to save positions a bit more safely.
- it comes with software (jetAudio) which can convert pretty much any video to MPEG4 of various different sizes. The videos that I first put on my D2 (downloaded using Bittorrent) didn’t play and I had to convert them to MPEG4. The conversion process IS very easy and, considering this isn’t a large capacity player, I expect we’ll be converting our videos anyway, just to bring the file sizes down.
As for HD cards, I'll be buying a 4GB SD card very soon. Unfortunately I don't have access to (nor can I afford to buy!) an 8GB SDHC card. If anyone can supply a definitive answer to this, The Most Significant Question discussed here, I'd be greatly appreciative. I'm hoping, like most of you, that a simple firmware update in the future will allow SDHC support, but I'm not really familiar with flash memory tech (I've just retired my 3rg gen 40GB iPod. Ha …).
Hope that helps :o)
Hi rich, how do you set the "m" button for skip tracks etc, I couldnt do it!

This is going to one of the best media players released in a long while IMHO. My iriver has just recently died so i am looking for a replacement - I am definatly getting this very soon. Im just wondering what the likelihood of the internal memory being upgraded to 6GB, 8GB or maybe even more is? because if there is a chance in the near future for it to be upgraded i may well wait until then.

Hi rich, how do you set the "m" button for skip tracks etc, I couldnt do it!
1. go to Settings > General > User defined button (last in list);
2. select one of the three options;
3. press Save.
I'm assuming our firmware's the same version. Goodluck :o)
Great, thanks...got it now [thumbsup]
Re the first question, both music and video will resume from where you left off after switching between or turning the player off so will suit your needs down to the ground :)
The playlist function is very good but from what I can see you cant add a full album in one go, seems to be only by individual track. During a file being played you can hit the browser button that brings up a menu to the left giving the following options...
1. Add to bookmark
2. Add to DPL (Dynamic Play List)
3. Bookmark List
4. DPL
5. Music List
Hope this helps.
How about .m3u playlists?

Bummer. Hmm, that's a bit odd as I would have thought that Cowon would have implemented this by default as this is a very common action. I think the A2 also did not initially have this feature until a firmware update rectified this (i.e. adding an "add folder" option, I believe, as an action). I just hope Cowon does implement this quickly after release. Cheers.

Re. Dynamic Play Lists (DPL):
You can't add albums, per say, but you CAN add whole folders, which is almost the same thing if your upload you music files in an Artist > Album > Track folder structure (I'm using Winamp to manage my D2 files, btw, not the iAudio s/w).
- go to Music List (from track playing screen, press Browser > Music List).
- browse to a folder of your choice (album or artist) and press Settings > Add to DPL.
There you have it, all tracks in that folder have been added to the DPL :o)
Hope that answers some of your questions.

Yes, that's exactly what I meant! Heh, I was beginning to think why Cowon was going backwards in functionality...
I'm guessing the unit will just read an image file (i.e. .jpg) within each folder you have added to the DPL, and display that as the current album cover art, yes?
Also, would you happen to have any videos with subtitles in them to test? The reason why I ask is because users of the X5 who tried to watch subtitled anime had trouble viewing them (I guess not surprising considering the size of the screen). I was curious as the size of the screen is between that of the X5 and A2. Thanks.

Album Art:
I used this software to download and manage album art:
http://louhi.kempele.fi/~skyostil/projects/albumart/
It's a bit fiddly to use (trial and error) but it's done a pretty good job. It's free. I'm not familiar with the ins and outs of this tech, so I just went for the first solution I could find.
Subtitled video
If you use the supplied jetAudio conversion tool, there are options for including subs in your converted file. These options include changing font sizes. I test converted an OGM video with SRT sub file and it worked fine on my D2.

If it's anything like their other players, the unit just simply displays an image file you have in a folder that has a currently playing audio file in it. Another method which album art could be possibly displayed (I'm not sure if it's supported or whether it will be supported in the future) is from a saved image within the MP3 tag.

I've actually tried that method to begin with as well as that application. If I was you (and if you have quite a large album collection, and it isn't neccesary according to hardware), I would probably recommend placing an image in a folder (you of course need to organise album by folder) as I have found it took far too long to write the MP3 to each file rather than just dumping a single image in the folder. Plus, what's the point in having duplicate copies of the same file?
I've experimented quite a bit with a few options, but believe it or not I think the easiest way to manage you album cover art collection is by using the latest version of Windows Media Player as you can simply copy an image from a website (e.g. Amazon.com) and then paste it into the empty album cover spot in WMP, which then places the formatted image in the correct folder. I hope this helps you a lot.

That feature sounds helpful; nice. Would you happen to know how hard-subbed (embedded into the actual video) subtitles look on the screen at an average size?

Thanks for the album art tips. I'll try that and use smaller sized images too in order to save some file space.
Re. subs again, I only have one movie file with embedded subs, a music vid. It uses a slightly less than normal sized font so on the D2 they're very small and I could only just make them out. Regular sized subs should be more readable but I couldn't imagine watching a whole movie like that...my eyes would probably dry up for good ;o)

Looking at this page (http://board.cowon.com/zeroboard/zbo...&no=95&bmenu=B), Is it me or does the screen seem to have a fair bit of colour pixelation?
Oh yes and I might aswel ask - Is there much chance of the internal capacity being increased to 8gb in the hopefully near future?

What if the video you have doesn't have a SRT sub file with it but it already has subtitles embedded within the video? (like most fansubs) Is there a way to change the size of the subtitles?

If the subs are embedded then they are no longer text but part of the movie image so it'll be impossible to increase the size.

There is another player the Meizo 6 that...might also work but Cowon's player is nicer.
I inquired about bookmarking on the Meizo 6 but it doesn't support this feature. I was told that it might be added in future firmware. That blew it for me. I must have a bookmark feature!

So is the subtitles on most videos readable without increasing the font size?

I don't have any movies with hard-encoded subs, I deleted them all!
IF the subtitles are big enough and embedded using a good font and colour, then I'm sure they could be read, maybe. Better to ask someone who actually knows :) sorry.

the best font for subtitles is Arial Narrow Bold with black fog under the font - it looks the best
here how it look:
