So i saw the cowon d2 on Dapreview and engadget. Im horrified to see the path Cowon has chosen. What do people think of it?
I dont know what to say..... its an eyesore. (in my opinion). I think its cool they added an sd slot, but the design....yikes.[blush]

I like the look of it... and thing the touch screen could be really cool
Looks good for people that can receive DMB (Koreans). Looks bad for people that want an audio-centric device (me).

I didn't pay much attention to the article before the update - 4gb memory for the D1! Certainly on my list of things to get over the next month or so. [biggrin]

I actually like the design but am stumped as to why anybody would want to buy this.
The way I see it it's basically an overpriced flash music player with a nifty touchscreen interface.
Who would watch videos on a tiny 2.5 inch TOUCHSCREEN? (= finger smudges...)
It's a good design study but I doubt they'll be commercially successful.

The price hasn't been announced yet, but I don't expect it to be cheap.
2.5 inches is more than enough to watch music videos and television shows. It's the perfect size for picture and text browsing while being very pocketable. An SD slot allows you to carry as much music as you want. I can carry my entire Queen collection in my wallet with a 2 gig card. With the surplus of SD cards and their price drops, I can buy as many as I need.
45 hours of battery will let me listen to music during a week vacation without needing a charger. I could accidentally leave the player on overnight and still have enough juice to listen to it all of the next day. Flash memory has huge advantages over hard drives.
This player will continue the tradition of Cowon's superb sound quality and wide audio format support (now with 94mW to boot). The recording and fm radio features are vital to me since I am a musician and study foreign languages.
TV out is a nice bonus which I can't admit I'd use often, but it would be cool to watch Futurama on a TV at a hotel.
The touch screen isn't my favorite navigation tool but I think it's appropriate for a player with no room for every function. If I'm not mistaken, there are dedicated volume buttons.
Best of all, I know it will have UMS and I know I won't have to convert pictures through a proprietary program to view them. Hopefully Cowon will implement id3 database as they did with the I6.
Lastly, it looks like there is a good chance it will have album art as well.

Snicker.
Good luck getting 45 hours of anything with this device. You're going to need it, considering the bright screen it has.

Why would the screen affect the battery life when it is off and only the audio is playing?
I hope it is sdhc compatible, but I doubt it will be since it hasn't been advertised. If it was compatible, this player could hold 36 gigs in the future (32gb sdhc + 4 built-in gigs).

The design seems like a mix of ARCHOS (tough metal looking) but without ignoring the APPLE color factors BLack vs. White..... Personally i think the design and from factor is deadly boring..... and a 2,5" touch screen.... Isnt that like having Bettle car with a huge Camper behind it. Doesnt make any sense. im still very confused about their new products.
Im fine w the design. Even it dun have 4GB built in mem, its has an SD CARD SLOT!
I think the design is pretty elegant.
The touch screen is a great idea. It goes along the lines of making things simpler and simpler. The less buttons, the better imo (without decreasing functionality of course). Plus, if you look at some of the pictures, there's a small stylus that you can use. That way you won't get too many smudges on it. I use a Palm a lot and sometimes use my hand to go through menus when I'm lazy and I don't get much smudging so I don't think it's a major issue.
I love the SD card slot. 2Gb from the player and a 4Gb card is enough for me. You could fit a few movies and still have a lot of room for music. If you really want more videos and more space just bring a spare SD card.
I will probably sell my A2 to get this since my Palm plays videos almost as well as the A2 (and is 1/4 of the size). The only worry I have is the size of the D2... it's small but to fit comfortably in the front pocket, I would need something no bigger than a nano. I also wonder how the touch screen turns off when in the pocket (otherwise you're going to get a lot of accidental button pressing).
Bravo Cowon!

this made me sad faced. If it still had traditional navigation buttons and/or IS touch based, its still be ok. I dont want to use the stylus thingy majigger, it looks tacky.

You can still use your fingers on a screen that was designed for a stylus. The stylus gives you greater accuracy, but I use my fingers on my PDA every day, I just pull the stylus out when I want to write. Also, if the Invisible Shield is precut for the device that's even better. Slap one of those on there and you don't have to worry about scratches from when you use something other than the stylus and finger prints wipe right off.
As a general rule I find that most touch screen have a poorer picture quality than the same screen without the touch option.
This is confirmed by the first tests and reviews of the 604 wifi compared to the normal 604 for example.
AND all this BEFORE you start touching the screen with either a stylus or your fingers (eeeek! fingerprints everywhere!).
Not a fan of touch screen at all.
Eric
Yeah, I think the stylus thing might be optional. Some of the players have them attached, some don't.

eric3a - Yeah, I agree with you on the quality issue of touch vs. normal. For the fingerprint issue I highly recommend installing a high quality screen protector right when you get a device with that type of screen. With the IS on my PDA it's been perfect, and I can use my shirt to wipe away fingerprints. I ordered an IS for my GPS unit the same day I order the unit. No reason to let fingerprints ever touch the screen.

I am not a fan of touch screens myself because of it's durability but this makes it one of the better cowon interfaces in my opinion.

The I-Station v43 had a beautiful screen and a touchscreen interface. People who had both the A2 and v43 cleary favored the v43. I think the screen quality is more influenced by other factors.
