View Full Version : some questions about the g3
hello everybody ! its my first post here and im thrilled with my g3
there were some questions i wanted to ask :
1 : i usualy buy a 4pack battaries for 1$ nad they run out in about 5-7 hours.. is that normal ?
2: th headphones i got with the player suck , does the shure e2c will be a good choice for the g3 ?
and the most important question : can i upgrade the internal memory in the player ? i mean like from 512 to 1giga.. because i assume the g3 uses type-II compact flash or sd flash cards ? has anyone ever tried doing that ?
thanks for all the repliers and have a great day :-)

first of all 4 batteries for 1 dollar are going to suck for sure but some decent batteries should give you closer to 40 to 50 hours.
And upgrading the memory as far as i know is out of the question because there is no compact flash card slot. Hope this helps!
i meant upgrading the memory by opening the device itself and taking ut its memory and puting 1 giga.. is that possible ?

maybe but i wouldn't risk it.
How good are you at desoldering TSOPs? That would be the best case, they might be using MLFs or <shudder> FBGAs.
tsayin, most of everything you said looks like jibrish to me.. cant i just open the device and take out the memory that the iaudio is using (512mb in my case) and put a1024mb instead ? why do i even need to solder anything ?
funny, I thought the same think.
I guess in higher volumes is cheaper for Cowon to use the barebone nand flash chips.
Solaris I think the only way to find out is opening it, I don't think you'll void the warranty since there is no sealing tape or someting like that. But is risky if you can't put it back, or you can end up with an disfigured G3.
I think the easier way to upgrade is just getting another with higher capacity and selling yours if you changed your mind.
Alternatively you can use OGG files at Q1 to maximize your space
I think it would have been a great idea if Cowon have used standard SD cards inside.
I know for sure CF card is impossible b/c the size of G3, but SD migh have a sligh chance in there.
At any rate, if you decide to open it, let us know what you find and take some pics.
I'm curious too.
Good luck,

G3 dismantled. Enjoy.

Thanks Fuzzy.
I just went there but it was too slow.
wonder if some one can host those photos in another faster/closer site.
TSOP, MLF and FBGA are all types of chip packages that are used for flash chips. I listed them in order of rework difficulty, where the pins on an mMLF are smaller and closer together than the ones on a TSOP, which are already closer together than I like working with manually, and a BGA has a grid of pads underneath, no pins, and can't be placed or removed manually at all.
