I extracted the substitles from an mkv file. The only problem is that they are in .ass format. Is there away to convert the .ass into .srt format. I tried manually changing it into .srt and it work fine on my pc but not my cowon a2.

I don't work with subtitles much myself, but here's one place you could check for answers. First look at their guides to see if it already addressed, otherwise check out their forums, probably a better place to find support for video editing in general.

Subtitle Workshop can handle almost every possible subtitle format.
Google it up or search for it at doom9.
