Hi,
I have an A2 that seems to be out of phase or something like that. There is a significant problem when listening to music or a movie through the headphone jack: if the LR Balance is set to the center position (at 0), the vocals can hardly be heard. It's like the vocalist(s) are very far away.

If I set the balance completely to the Left OR the Right, the vocals can be heard fine (and sound comes out of both earphones), but then there's a lot of missing musical information. This is especially noticeable on music from the '60s and early '70s songs (Beatles and Jim Croce, for example), when there are only 2 or 4 tracks in the song. Also, in either fully left or right position, if I change the setting from "stereo" to "mono", nothing can be heard through the headphones.

If I set the balance to slightly left or right, the vocals sound a bit less "far away" but it is still a significant problem.

Clearly, I should and want to be able to set the balance to the center and hear everything normally. The problem is not the headphones, as I've tried several pairs that I know work fine and the problem happens with every pair.

Note that with the external speakers, things sound fine!

The firmware is at rev 1.81.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Perhaps something is wrong with the headphone jack (?). I don't think this is the case but I'm no engineer. I love the player but don't know what to do to correct this problem.

Thanks,
Josh

is phone jack plugged firmly?
hearing from both phones when balance is fully left or right usually means that jack is not plugged fully

try to reinstall the firmware and post your results. i don't think it is a headphone problem since you have tried with more than one.

best of luk

I tried to reinstall the v1.81 f/w to no avail. I then tried the v1.77 and still I have the same problem: out of phase when the balance is set to the center (0). Any other suggestions? I bought this A2 on ebay from jetaudio - it was a refurb model but was told it had full factory 2 yr. warranty.

Barring any other thoughts, I'll have to send it to cowon to fix/replace it.

Anyone know of a phone number I can call them on that will actually get through to a live human being?

Thanks for helping!
josh

This may be a silly suggestion, but there are equalizer settings where voice is hard to hear. Make sure your equalizer is set to normal and see if that helps.
