Is it true that Cowon has no intention of releasing new firmwares for the X5 in the future? Not that I'm interested, I'm deep into rockbox now but still it feels wrong knowing that there's not gonna be future support/bugfixes for such a nice device..

True.
We are/I am not expection any futher firmware releases.[unsure]

It's really sad and puts a lot of question marks to Cowon.

Anyway still in love with my X5.

rockbox will continue to grow and improve and is already beyond the cowon firmware, so who cares what bug fixes or features cowon could release. it doesn't affect me because of rockbox and it sounds like it doesn't really affect you for the same reasons.

rockbox...is already beyond the cowon firmware

That's simply not true. The battery life on Rockbox is still not as good despite the recent fix.

That's strange.. I still get more time running rockbox.. That's 6 hours instead of 5 when running the original firmware.. I guess that this late usbotg-off patch actually works..haven't run a test with a previous build of rockbox though..

I also think my battery life is better with rockbox.

my battery life with rockbox is at least as good as with cowon firmware, but i'm using additional features that you would think use more battery - so i guess you could say battery life is better with rockbox.

And, most importantly, Rockbox doesn't sound as good as the original firmware...

I don't see that.. Okay, maybe sound is more dificult to configure using rockbox, but once done you can get similar sound..

True, a good EQ and crossfeed does the job very good.

i have rockbox, and love it, but its hard to say that it has passed the of. ATM we dont have video or usb otg, two key features of the x5. I am very confident rockbox will far surpass the of in the future [biggrin]

usb-otg is a clutch feature on the x5 to me, good point midgen.

yes good points. i was meaning rockbox is better than original fw for music playback. i'd love to have video and usb-otg features added to rockbox, but since they're less used features its no bother having the dual-bootloader. so you're right in that i still must use the original firmware for those purposes. i was happy with the cowon firmware, but rockbox just makes the x5 so much better.

I hardly use video anymore and usb-otg is a pain in the ass when copying more then 1 file.
But still a reason to keep the dualbootloader...

I copy literally dozens of files over usb-otg without any problems. If you are selecting each file individually I could see that being cumbersome, but I just grab the folder and paste it.

I would've thought that rockbox would never aim to support usbotg or video.... maybe jpeg at a push but isn't it primarily an audio system? maybe when they've got a stable release and when they know more about the hardware (still have questionable chips on their website)

I doubt rockbox will ever be able to equal the cowon firmware in sound if the EQ features are as good as they look... i am awaiting delivery of my audio player because there was a cock up after the uk distributor went bust..

I ordered the M5 :D although to be fair i did decide to change to the X5 when i was told that the M5 would no longer be available in the UK.. then they told me they had 5 M5s left so i'm even happier..

I expect most people don't use video and USB OTG that much although i can see that they could be very useful.. I don't like the sound of rockbox because it is something that seems unfinished... i would like it alot more if they supported more cowon products and didn't have unknown chips on their site... Isn't rockbox emulated anyway? From what I've read about rockbox it sounds like it would use more cpu resources than the cowon firmware.. and not that i'm against reverse engineering and stuff but i would prefer to use cowon firmware unless there was a real benefit..... i just think its funny all the people who want a crappy id3 database.. from what i've seen with song databases they just get corrupted.. and amarok does a fine job of telling me what songs i've listened to often with my current player (Medion 1GB + SD/MMC) so i think that will be fine with the iaudio player. I like folders you get more control then.. although a database would be a useful additional feature if it didn't use up resources, slow down the player or make it harder to transfer stuff to it.

I think that if firmware is at a stable level then companies usually don't change it... but cowon say they listen so really you should push the issue on the forums on iaudio.com or cowonglobal or whatever it is, or contact them directly... you never know they might make changes...

Actually, Rockbox's equalizer is much better than Cowon's. It's the (proprietary) BBE enhancements that make the difference. Some people say they're unnecessary - some people can't live without them (I'm one of the latter).

I was talking about the enhancements.. not that i've tried them yet because my player will not come till monday....

but i heard they do use more battery life...
